Can you APPEAR to have herpes but all tests come back negative?

My husband showed a strange breakout on his penis that REALLY looked like herpes. He went to the dr. and they took blood and a swab test and tested for herpes and every other STD. All the tests came back negative but the breakout and symptoms he had (groin pain, burning urination) are just like having herpes. I DON'T UNDERSTAND! Could he still have them even though the tests came back negative while he was tested during a strange breakout?

Yes. The only accurate Herpes Blood Tests available is the Herpes I & II IgG or Herpes I & II Western Blot. Both of these tests require 12-16 weeks after exposure before they are accurate. If this is his first exposure, they will almost certainly be negative. The Herpes I & II IgM test is worthless. If the doctor ordered it, ask for a refund and change doctors.

The culture test would be more accurate if the sample was taken right after the symptoms appeared (a few days). About 50% of these tests may report false negative because the virus was killed during transportation to the lab. This happens often.

A good doctor will be able to diagnose Herpes by visual inspection and follow up with an IgG test at 12 weeks for confirmation and to determine was type it is.

All herpes tests are different! It depends how many times you took the test. Look for other options on what kind of sore he have. There are a lot of symptons to different diseases that are the same. Reaserch a little bit more if you already havent. Ummm, look at other possible sores that his sore may be and get tested for that particular sore. Its just like vaginal discharge, a women could have a yeast infection or genital herpes. both diseases have the same symptons. So dont panic if its not herpes its something else!

I have heard of people getting blood tests for the herpes virus that came back negative when they in fact do have the virus, but I have never heard of a swab test being wrong (that doesn't mean it can't be wrong though). A physical exam and a swab test is the most accurate way of diagnosing genital herpes. It is possible for him to have herpes and have a negative test result (but this would be pretty rare).

Has your husband been tested for chancroid? Chancroid sores can sometimes be confused with herpes sores. It's a bacterial STD so it can be treated with medication.
