Our office receptionist has been getting the signs of diabetes (thirsty, going to the loo a lot, blurred vision, headaches, tiredness) for the last week, and she has a history in the family. I am concerned, both as a friend, and as one of the company First Aiders. How quickly should she be getting to a dr (she "doesn't want to make a fuss"), and, more importantly, how long, if she leaves it, would it be before something major happens?

How long can't be guessed. She could suddenly have very serious and emergent problems or have the signs come and go or anything in between. It could change to sudden also. She shouldn't wait. The longer she goes with even minr symptoms, the more likely to she can have related problems which may not be reversible or create chronic health problems. p.s. - urine testing gives only indicator signs to doctors, it is not used to diagnose diabetes. Blood testing and glucose tolerance testing are used for diagnosis.

The longer she leaves this the more damage is happening to her body. Un-treated,her heart and kidneys will be damaged, she will get retinopathy of the eyes, which is ir-reversable and can cause blindness, the nerves in her legs and feet will get damaged, she will begin to lose weight and un-treated she will eventually die. She must see a doctor immediately, there really is no time to waste.
Incidentally I take 4 insulin injections a day and believe me they DO NOT HURT, I have been injecting since 1993 and I gave myself the very first one I ever had, I didn't practice on an orange or anything. The needles are microfine and you simply stick it into certain parts of your body, you don't inject into the veins. I feel great and have so much energy, infact I am 100% certain that I feel better than your friend does. At the moment the condition is ruling her life, whereas I am in control of my life. Please do all you can to help her, you must find a way for her to visit a doctor ( even if it's underhand ).

Diabetes takes various forms and needs evaluated by a physician. to determine if medication is warranted. It is a serious condition and may cause blindness and even force amputation of the legs, etc. There is no time element involved...some people progress rapidly and others may have diabetes for years becore it becomes serious. A simple bloood sugar test will help and less accurately, a urine sugar (less accurate only because it needs interpretation by a doctor to be of much use)....prolong your friend's life and urge her to go to a doctor.

You have used "the receptionist has been getting.....", it means the symptoms were visibly seen way back and I wonder really what made her to wait at such long interval....and even it is amazing that she "doesn't want to make a fuss". It would have been better if you have mentioned her age and probable weight too as these two conditions are very important in judging the direness of the situation. Anyway still you have provided ample information, and as others have suggested you....ITS THE TIME FOR TAKING PROPER ACTION......You seems a nice friend and advisor to that girl and just do another favour to her and take her personally to the expert in the field and have her thorough checkup......she has still pretty much time to get back.

The longer Diabetes goes unchecked and treated the damge to your body may have serious consequences, it is easy to treat and depending on if she has type1 or type 2 diabetes will determine what treatment she needs, maybe as simple as diet control, tablet or iv insulin injections, Diabetes if undetected will maybe lead to stroke, heart attack.
It won't take long for serious complications set in if she doesn't recieve treatment. So she must see Dr. ASAP!!!!!!

All that you just mentions happened to me, I let it go on for about 3 months off and on. I ended up in the hospital with a glucose level of 345 and a blood pressure of 226/93 ( which was caused by the diabetes). I too have a history in my family. Tell your friend she needs to get to the hospital ASAP!!! or you'll find her passed out in the loo.

Depends on the type she has type 1 insulin dependent sends the body into critical condition within days. My son did not take insulin and within two days he was in ICU and almost died. Type 2 is where you make insulin but not enough to work correctly sometimes diet and exercise can be all they need. Due to the fact she thinks she has it and she has history you need to get her to a doctor explain she can pass out without warning and if she is driving innocent people can be involved. A friend of ours is legally blind because her blood sugar went out of control for three days when her mother passed away.

Have a sugary drink to hand as first aid.
She should modify her diet, probably. Most people do not eat optimally. As regards diabetes, any high GI food is not good. Complex carbohydrates are better. Plenty of fibre in the diet is very helpful.
She should do plenty of physical exercise.
