I get the strangest feeling in my jaw muscle right in front of my ear that spreads down my jaw line toward my chin and right under the apple of my cheek whenever I eat Thai or Chinese food. It feels like my jaw muscle is tightening up as I am eating, but it quickly goes away after dinner is over, Has anyone had this happen to them or know what could be causing this such as a certain spice or preservative used in Asian cooking?

could be an allergy, I'd avoid it for a while, see if you get that kind of reaction with any other kinds of food, and tell your doctor about it at your next check-up.

It could be caused by eating MSG, (monosodium glutamate) an additive used to enhance flavor.

Until Nutrasweet hit the market, MSG was the NUMBER 1 reported food allergen. It often causes headaches in sensitive people.

You can ask that the restaurant NOT add it to the food, but buffets will already have it added.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

It could be an allergic reaction to something in the food. I always got a itching sensation in my throat whenever I ate chinese food.
I found out it was either the bean sprouts or onions, so now I always order my food(usually chicken fried rice) with no vegeatables. No more itching sensation.

It could simply be your body's reaction to a spice or preservative that is used in Asian cooking such as MSG... you may just be ultra sensitive to the mystery ingredient....

i was thinking of perhaps allergies, but you say it goes away after eating. the only spices i know of in chinese food is black pepper, star anise, ginger, and curry. you should probably not eat those kinds of food until you find out exactly what's causing that. good luck!!

if you get take out, asian restaurants add msg, which makes the food taste better but also makes you extremely thirsty. check with your doctor.

It is most likely the MSG (mono sodium glutamate) that some restaurants use as a taste enhancer.
Good restaurants never use it and obtain the good taste of their dishes by using the best and the freshest ingredients.

They probably add too much MSD.
I think that's what it's called...

They add that stuff in Korean cuisine, too.
It's supposed to make the food more delicious but it's not good for you... :[
