It is possible to have the virus and not have symptoms of it. Most people will have whats called an outbreak. It's where large sores can appear in the genital area (if you have genital herpes). Some people though, don't have any symptoms of the virus, like outbreaks. They still carry the virus, they just don't show any signs of it. This is pretty rare but it does happen.

Hello:
This answer is in response to your question posted on yahoo about herpes.
There are now 8 types of herpes, but the two I am sure you are concerned most about are the HSV I and HSV II.
HSV I is responsible for most cold sores, fever blisters.
HSV II is responsible for most cases of genital herpes.
Although very rare, it is now known that you can transmit HSV I below the waist and HSV II above the waist. This is how us doctors classified HSV I and II. HSV ! is above the waist and HSV II is below the waist.
To answer your question, Yes. You could have been exposed to the herpes virus and have the virus lying dormant in your body without ever having an outbreak of any kind. That doesnt mean it is not in your system. You just never had a skin outbreak, yet. Researchers used to think that you couldnt transmit herpes unless you actually had the skin lesion, but they now know that you can transmit the virus even if there is no blister on the skin.
The best thing you can do is go to your physician and ask for the following tests: HSV I & 2 IgG and IgM antibodies. The IgG antibody will tell if you have had the virus(s) in your system for a long time. The IgM antibody will tell if you were just recently infected with the virus.
I hope this helped answer your question and alleviate some of your concerns.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.

No, if you are a carrier then you have herpes, it is possible to be a carrier, and not give it to someone, I mean because there are times that you may not spread it. But in order to be a carrier you have to have herpes and vica versa. Good Luck!
