has your doctor tested you for hypercoagualability syndrome? that could be a reason the coumadin doesnt work , and you get recurrent clots,

No, I do not believe you can become immune. What is your weight? Have you lost or gained any in the past 2 weeks? That could account for the trouble stabilizing. The dosages 8-15mg are a little high. There are times when those who take warfarin have difficulty stabilizing. Also, it can depend on your blood volume status. If you are drinking not enough and are slightly dehydrated the INR may be higher, if you are drinking alot of fluids and your blood volume is more dilute then it may be lower. Also, you are careful w/ your diet but there are so many things, both food and vitamins (herbal supplements also) that can make a huge difference. Hope that helped you a little

All of the answers here are very good, but I have one more consideration to add. I have been on Coumadin for over 20 years as a precaution related to mitral valve stenosis - scarring from rheumatic fever prohibits proper opening of the valve, which tends to promote a blood clot over time (mine did.) I was always on Coumadin brand, because generic warfarin is not consistant amongst the various drug companies. Four years ago I was off Coumadin and on Lovenox for 7 weeks after surgery. Resumption of Coumadin failed to budge my INR over 1.2, even with 10 to 15mg daily. Study by a hemotologist showed very high blood levels of homocysteine (an amino acid) which promotes clotting, and encourages buildup of plaque. I also was on 3 anti-mycobacteria drugs. Elimination of 2, plus addition of Folic Acid, B12 and B6 solved the problem. Another time VFend caused my INR to soar to 4.9 and more. So, my point is that drugs you are taking might be the cause, especially if you weren't taking them previously. As to quality of warfarin, my cardiologist told me it is not as inferior as the drug reps have brainwashed the nurses into believing. It would only vary between manufacturers, not within pills of the same drug company. As to the impact of food, spinach and other green leafy vegs dampen the effect of Coumadin, as do broccoli and cauliflower. There must be something you are ingesting affecting your INR, or could be homocysteine if it's levels in your blood can fluctuate.

That is generic coumadin and I have noticed it is inefficient and alters daddy withing a week of taking it. Doctor knows it is because the warfarin is not an equal to coumadin and now only prescribes the coumadin. might cost more but, its a human life.
Mother had caught this, and I think the doctor doubted her assesment, after she died he prescribed it again and bam same inconsistencies returned in his readings. Now we all know.
She had an old bottle and I knew she had a reason for it not being used up, found out the expensive way, wasting money on warfarin just so the doc could 'test' her theory thinking nobody would know.

No a person does not become immune to coumadin (warfarin) Dosage is calculated by a pts PT/INR, it can vary daily, even hourly. Some drugs also intefer with coumadins effect as well as diet. Has your doctor considred any other anticoagulant instead of coumadin such as Lovenox or heaprin therapy?
With your history of Pulmonary Embolisims have your Dr.'s suggested a filiter in case you need surgery again or become on bed rest for any reason?

I too have had trouble with INR stability. I have been on it for 2 years and after PTE surgery. Will be a "Warfarin Lifer". Just had my INR checked today. 1.5. It has been all over the map for the past month or so, as high as 5.6. Diet appears to be consistent, but, as the others have stated, it is such a sensitive drug, almost anything can affect it. I average 7.5mg daily, but have been as high as 10mg. Just keep a closer eye on your diet, and I wish you the best of luck.

Even though you are careful with the intake of vitimine E and K you might now be able to complete stablize your INR. Alot of things can effect your results. Even your intake of potassium can do this. I was on warfarin due to a blood clot and my dosage was always having to be adjusted. Everyone needs a different doesage because everyones body reacts differently to it.
