Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing

What causes Asthma

Air reaches the lungs by passing through the windpipe (trachea) which divides into two large tubes (bronchi), one for each lung.

Each bronchi further divides into other smaller tubes (bronchioles), which lead to tiny air sacs (alveoli), through which oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is transferred out of the body.

Asthma involves both bronchi and bronchioles but not the alveoli.

These airways are kept clean by the tiny hairs (cilia) which trap particles in a thin layer of mucus. This is then swept through the windpipe to be coughed up or swallowed.

In Asthma, the airways become oversensitive to the particles, and cause a reaction.

Asthma is a chronic condition marked by periodic attacks od wheezing and difficulty in breathing. The cause of asthma attacks is partial obstruction of the bronchi and bronchioles due to contraction of the muscles in the bronchial walls. Most asthma is triggered by an allergy to such things as pollen, skin particles (dander) or hairs of cats or dogs, or miniscule mites in house dust. Attacks can also be caused by infections (especially of the respiratory tract), certain drugs, inhaled irritants, vigorous exercise, and psychological stress.

It is where the bronchioles in the lungs constrict preventing proper airflow. There are many things that trigger this in different people. It can be so bad that a person ends up with COPD, a serious lung problem. It can also be only when a person exercises, or in a child that will eventually outgrow it.
