yes! pneumonia, infection in the lungs, is attributable to bacteria or virus. ignoring symptoms or not taking the full dose of antibiotics can have a fulminating affect. The bug count increases and become resistant to medications taken for short time. Bug will spread throughout body including the menigies of the brain and leading to encephalitis. For some at this stage there is no coming back and for some with good initial diagnosis their prognosis is better. Once encephalitis is diagnosed one is treated with intavenous antibiotics and antivirals until spinal fluid sne to lab gives the absolute cause of the condition. Deadly disease.

Any viral or bacterial infection can travel to the brain and result in encephalitis.

The organism that caused the pneumonia may also be able to cause meningitis - one organism that can cause meningitis is Hemophilus meningitidis. I don't' remember for sure but I think it can cause pneumonia too.
