I mean, seriously...a "hole" is, according to dictionary.com, 1) A hollowed place in something solid; a cavity or pit: dug a hole in the ground with a shovel; 2) An opening or perforation. That would mean that it's not tangeable (touchable), right? Then WHY, tell me, WHY ARE DOUGHNUT HOLES TANGEABLE, much less EDIBLE?? Why, I tell you, WHY?!?!?!? ;)

You know, this is actually a rather intelligent question because technically a donut hole IS the empty space in the center of a donut which is a ring. However, traditionally the part of dough which is cut out to form the ring creating a donut, when fried and eaten has been called a donut hole. Techinically I suppose it should be called the donut's center.

PS - I found this for you:
EXTRAORDINARY ORIGINS OF EVERDAY THINGS by Charles Panati. "For over two hundred fifty years, doughnuts, which originated with Dutch bakes did not have holes in the center; the hole was an American modification that, once intoduced, redifined the shape of the pastry. The deep fried batter doughnut originated in the sixteenth century Holland, where it was known as an Olykoek..."

Because they're actual objects. Have you never seen 'donut holes', in the supermarket? They're little balls, but just like a donut. I'd say that they're the bit that's cut out, while making mass production donuts, but who knows. You're right about the concept of them being intangeable, but that's smart marketing. You know that you think too much, don't you?

Gee Becky, because they are made from dough, which upon it's removal from the donut itself, leaves a hole. If you like, call them the donut's hole dough instead.

Good luck on your quest.

I guess it's because they're what you have to take out to make the holes in the first place.
