My husband just found out he has herpes. He had a strange break out of tiny bumps on his penis and his groin was hurting like he pulled something. He went to the dr. and was told it looked like herpes but the tests won't be back for 3 days. If he DOES have herpes I'm positive I will too since we had intercourse at the very beginning of his symptoms. I feel like our lives are over. We're both so scared. Can we kiss our kids? Can we ever have a normal sex life again? I just want advice from someone who DOES live with this disease and I hope the advice is that I'm over reacting and that everything really will be fine. Please help!

Oh, and the dr. said that my husband could have contracted herpes years ago and it lay dormant for all this time. He works 2 jobs and doesn't have time to cheat on me, so that's not really the issue.

I've sent you an email with information on this. It is NOT the end of the world, and you guys will be ok. You can prevent or lessen your (& your husband's) breakouts without using the medications advertised on t.v. (I've told you how in the email). Do this and be smart...no skin to skin contact with others when you have an open sore anywhere (mouth, or genitals). Take this punch and move on with life.

Sounds a lot like herpes. The feeling that he has like he pulled something are lymphknots that are hurting him.
Don't forget there is medicine out there that you take every day and you both will most likely ( almost) outbreak free for as long as you take that stuff. (Valtrex? I think it's called).

Herpes can be 'sleeping' in your body for a long time so the doc is right about this. Herpes outbreaks are usually triggered by stress, exposure to too much sun....

Your lives are not over! Even though there is currently no cure for herpes it is not life threatening like HIV/AIDS and it does not cause serious health problems like cervical cancer like HPV can do.

Genital herpes and cold sores are two different strains of the herpes virus. Cold sores are typically herpes simplex virus 1, but can also cause genital herpes. And, genital herpes is typically herpes simplex virus 2, but can sometimes cause cold sores. If you have genital herpes you can kiss your kids with no problem. You can not pass genital herpes to your kids by kissing them. If you had cold sores, then you could definitely pass them on to your kids. But, since you said your husband has them on his penis, then it's genital herpes.

You can have a perfectly normal healthy sex life too. My fiance and I both have genital herpes and we have a great sex life. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years and he has had it about 8 months (I gave it to him). It's really nothing to overreact about. Even though the outbreak can be annoying and painful, there really are no other complications with the virus. It's not deadly, it doesn't cause infertility, or cause someone to become sterile. It's coming to a shock to you now (it did to me too when I first got it) but after a while you will see it's not the end of the world. Don't worry, everything will be fine!

And the doctor is right, herpes can have no symptoms for years sometimes. Most people have symptoms, but there are the few that can have no symptoms at all or it takes a while (like years) for them to have any signs of the virus.

You should further research cold sores/herpes. If you kiss your kids when you have a sore, and they touch that part of their face and put it in their mouth or eye they will most likely get it there. You can resume a normal sex life as soon as there are no sores, but you should get into the dr and let them know this so you can get treatment as well.

The question should be "Where did he get them?" Sorry to make you suspicious, but that was the first question that came to mind when I read this. But my uncle went to the doctor and they told him the same thing, but it ended up being cancer and they had to cut it out. So get a second opinion. Anyway, herpes can be controlled with medication. There is no cure. http://www.herpes.com/. This link should tell you all you need to know. Good luck.
