I have just come out of hospital with dangerously low iron and blood count. I was given daily iron via I.V. for two weeks. Anyone know how I can keep the levels up? (I was feeling really really weak) am feeling a bit stronger daily). I also have diabetes

Ask the doctor if vitamin B12 shots once a week or once a month is an option for you.Also since you were just hospitalized for this,you need to ask your doctor if iron supplements are what you need.I am surprised that they released you without any thing for your anemia.Diabetes can attribute to alot of problems withe the body.With a low white blood cell count did they do any extensive tests to determine if you have an underlying disease/problem?If you had a low RED BLOOD CELL count,did they check for any place where the blood was going?Usually a low red blood cell count is caused by bleeding,internal/external.

Be careful if you do decide to take iron supplements b/c overdosing can occur,(but this too can happen with regular vitamin supplements too,people just do not heed the warning or realize they can over dose on any medication including dietary supplements).

Women suffer from iron deficiencies more often than men.

There are two reasons for this:

1> women believe all of the BS about red meat being bad for you....lean stead is actually very good for you and has a bit of iron. Men tend to eat a lot more red meat than women.

2> women lose iron via the bleeding from their menstrual cycle - men, obviously, do not have that problem.

Here are two things that you can do:

1> take a multi-vitamin that has some iron in it. I would shy away from taking just an iron supplement because it is easy to take too much iron. Although Spinach is supposed to have a lot of iron in it, it also has an acid that interferes with iron absorption.

Here's something else you can try. Buy a cast iron skillet and use it when you prepare your daily meals, instead of a non-stick skillet. This is an old remedy for curing low iron levels. The drawback is that cast iron skillets are more difficult to clean, but that's a minor aggravation.

Of course, as many others are suggesting, you should check with your doctor to ensure that there isn't some other problem.

You could do a number of things to raise your iron, such as eat liver, and greens (the darker the better). Pork also helps to raise iron; I found that out when I was donating blood. But the best way to raise your iron without raising your sugar level is go to your doctor. Have him/her prescribe you iron vitamins that is suitable for diabetes.

dangerously low? Your doctor should have you tested for aplastic anemia - your bone marrow may have stopped producing new red blood cells, this is essential for life.
If you do have the disease, you'll need a bone marrow transplant and spend the rest of your life w/ transfusions
Catch this one early b/c it is a terrible thing be in poor health when you had the chance to do something about it sooner

*Note: Iron supplements or iron rich foods will not help w/ aplastic anemia since new RBCs are required to "hold on" to them in your blood

Unless you have a malabsorption problem, oral iron pills and a diet with lots of red meat should do the job. Daily IV iron I never would use. It is dangerous.

Before overdosing on un perscribed Iron tables that you may be able to buy from any supermarket, wait to follow the intructions of the doctor who first did the blood test. Your system just may have need a boost.
