Are the two sauces compatible, or is only one usually used at a time?

Is black bean sauce the same as soya sauce, which presumably is made from the soya bean?

the great thing about asian cooking is that you can mix just about anything.. Different parts of the countries use different styles and techniqes.. Its more flavorful if Thai sauce is used by itself and then soy is just used lightly as a flavor enhancer...
Technically black bean paste is not the same as soy sauce.. Yes they are all made from soy, but it is the fermination process that makes each one unique...

I don't think there is a specific sauce called thai sauce, and if there was, it's probably not soy sauce. Therefore, they wouldnot go together.

Black bean sauce is not soy sauce, it's made from black beans and garlic, not soy beans.

Also, the use of the word Oriental is quite antiquated, like using the word "colored" or "negro" to describe someone who is black. Asian is a better, more encompassing word, especially since you're asking about Thai cuisine and Thailand is not in the Orient.

unless you want your dish really salty, you don't want to mix the 2 together. these 2 sauces are used for their saltiness. the Thai is from fermented fish and the soya is, obviously, from fermented soy beans. For a hot dipping sauce, add chili flakes and lime (or lemon) into either sauce.
