I start school soon and i have a full-time job but i don't want to go to school and work full-time i want a job that pays well on the weekends. Should i pay to go to bartending school? Is it worth it? How long does it take?

Definitely do not go to bartending school. I own several bars and have never hired someone from bartending school. People start as a bar back, and then move their way up to bartender. You'll learn a lot more that way. The most important things in bartending is a great personality and being able to think on your feet. Bartending school can't teach you that.
Plus, there are actually a lot of "bartending schools" that are total scams.

Stuart is absolutely right! Don't waste your cash on "bartending school", its a scam. Read a book.
Most people want "something & something" (Gin & Tonic, Scotch & Soda, Rum & coke), if you can't figure that out you should retire now! Folks who want an unusual drink will revel in explaining to you EXACTLY how they want it made, so you don't need to already know!
Always know what time it is, where the bathroom is, have pens & paper to give away, and leave two dollar bills on the table as "seed money" for tips. Smile, try to remember what people were drinking, laugh at everybodies jokes, and soon you will be rich!
(Keep excellent records of tips so the taxman can't get mad at you!)

I'd recommend getting a job as a 'bar back' (you bring in clean glassware, ice, bottles, kegs, etc). That way, you'd be getting paid, would get a feel for the bartending life, and can learn mixology from working bartenders instead of some guy who wants to wow you with drink wizardry you'll never use.

I took a quick course and it took me 2 months but that was not an everyday thing. look for a school that will assist in placing you after you finish. Otherwise, if you don't go to bartending school your only hope is to work as a server in a restaurant bar and then maybe they will let you tend the bar after a while.

Nope, worked for 6 years as a Tender and never went to school. You don't need to, just find a job at a place that will hire you without it, get the experience, then go wherever you want. I made great money and knew just as much as the guys I worked with who went to school.

I was doing bartending for 6 months without any certificate. I don't think you really need go to school, because it may happen you'll find smth without certificate. Anyway if you feel like you need it, I'd advise you to get "Smart Serve" (you can get it through Internet). At many places managers ask about it.

My boyfriend is a bartender, he didn't have to go to school for it, they just trained him, but that depends on where you work and how badly they need a bartender, I suppose......there's a lot of good tips....its definitely worth it!

Bartending can be the funest thing you ever do. Other than bouncing at a strip club. Bouncers get big tips from strippers.
