Type II Diabetes doesn't mean you have to be hospital;ized unless you've had a bad episode of some sort. I f you have been just diagnosed, your doctor should have suggested an education course that will answer most of your questions. If he didn,t, call him back and ask if there is a patient education class for diabetes that you can attend. I f there is not, search the web. THere are alot of resources out there such as the american diabetic association.

Eat several small meals throughout the day rather than just 1 or 2 big meals.
Learn to use your meal plan in a variety of places and situations. A dietitian can help you create a meal plan.
Become more active. One approach is to walk or do another form of exercise for 10 minutes, 3 times a day.
Learn to check your blood sugar at home and what the results mean. Keep a log of your blood sugar readings.
Care for your skin and feet.
Wear or carry identification that says you have diabetes, in case of an emergency.
Learn all that you can about diabetes and how it is treated. As a person with diabetes, you provide most of your own care. The choices you make each day will affect your long-term health.
gd luck!

Unless your sugars are way out of control and causing other health issues, you shouldn't need hospitalization. Things you can do to help yourself include: lower your weight if you are heavy; walk 20 minutes after each meal for 15 to 30 minutes (walking so soon after a meal distributes the sugar quickly); watch your carbohydrates and fruits (these are where sugars are hidden).

I know a lot of people rag on Dr. Atkins, but my mother was a severe Type 2 diabetic four years ago. She follows Dr. Atkins (who DOES NOT subscribe to high levels of saturated fat!), and she is medication free today!! She watches her sugars, but she is off all meds!!! Another suggestion would be to follow the South Beach Diet; another good carb/bad carb guide,

As people have mentioned - watch your CARBS! Not just sugar. Eat complex carbs when you eat them and eat them with protein or fat. Like someone said, Atkins or South Beach is a good diet - they promote good carbs (like veggies).

Also, watch when you drink alcohol. It will LOWER your blood sugar, putting you at risk for a diabetic coma. Sounds weird since alcohol contains sugar, but my Mom is diabetic and learned this at her classes. If you are going to drink (which is fine) make sure you eat!

Exercise is very important. Lots of diabetics have circulation problems. If you have consistent numbness in your feet, wounds that won't heal, or blurry vision - GO TO A DOCTOR! Those symptoms mean your blood sugar has been too high for a while and it's starting to damage your body.

Diabetes is very controllable is you watch your diet and exercise.

It depends on what you mean by sick. I have Type 2 and have never had to be hospitalized for it. You need to eat right, exercise and watch your sugars.
