i have seen the same question asked on this forum fairly often. the question is, "can you get an std from a toilet seat?"

many people actually answer yes to this question.

if it REALLY is possible, then what i want to know is this: if about 1 in 4 people have herpes, and genital warts is the most common std, then why isn't there an epidemic of these peoples' children (who obviously share a toilet in the home) contracting the viruses from their parents?

I got this from a website that answered myths and misconceptions about herpes:

"3. You can get genital herpes from toilet seats.

Myth. The genital herpes virus is a fragile virus that dries out when it is exposed to air. There have been no proven cases of genital herpes transmission from a toilet seat."

Which only reiterates what we all should know...you can't get STDs from toilet seats.

Do you know for a FACT they are clean of STDs or did they just tell you they were "clean"? Where you there when they got tested for STDs? Some people don't think they have a STD because most STDs have no signs or symptoms. They will tell someone they don't have one, even though they do and are just unaware of it. Also, there is NO test to detect HPV in men, so it's basically impossible for men to know if they have HPV or not. Most men find out they have HPV by developing genital warts, but not everyone with HPV will develop genital warts! The second guy I ever slept with said he was "clean" and now I have two incurable diseases from having sex with him. The only person you can trust is yourself. Don't trust guys who say they are "clean". It might be true, but what if it's not? You could end up with a deadly STD or even become pregnant. Is it really worth the risk? ALWAYS use condoms if you are going to have sex. "Cottage cheese" discharge is a sign of a yeast infection, which is NOT a STD. It is an imbalance of the "good" bacteria and the "bad" bateria which are BOTH naturally found in the vagina. Yeast infections can go away on their own, but often need to be treated with medication. Monistat cream is available over the counter and there are also prescription medications available with a prescription from your doctor. I would HIGHLY suggest you get tested for STDs and get a pap smear done. A pap smear can detect any abnormalities on the cervix caused by HPV which can lead to cervical cancer. Good luck to you and stay safe!

The only STD I have read about that you can catch from a toilet seat is pubic lice (crabs) and even this is REALLY rare. Some sites I have read say even this is false.

You CAN NOT get herpes from a toilet seat. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years and during those five years I've shared toilets with friends, family, ex-boyfriends, etc. I have NEVER passed anyone the virus by having someone use a toilet seat after me.

"It's almost impossible to get the infection through contact with toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person, because the virus dies quickly outside the body."

I have seen a case of Herpes genitalis contracted from a public toilet and poison ivy contracted in a private home. These are weeping lesions and easy to leave on a toilet. Other Viruses and gonorrea and syphilis no.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy. Thanks
