I didn't realize I had a problem until I spent the night at my brother's home and his daughter told me I snored and then stopped breathing. When I was referred to the sleep disorder specialist I walked into her office and told her "this is just another way to separate a fool from their money." She said "Well, I would agree with you except that your oxygen level dropped below 60% during your sleep and your body tried to wake you 67 times in one hour to keep you alive. I am so excited you woke up." I was given an option of a CPAP or perhaps stroking during regular sleep patterns. I opted for the CPAP. There are many qualified folks out there who can help you determine if your husband needs an aid to help them sleep at night. Since my CPAP became a part of my regimen, I do not wake during the night for potty breaks, I don't wake up gasping for air, I sleep soundly and sometimes I even dream. Something I did not do before. I used to wake up 6 or 7 times a night. I would nod off at the office and the doctor told me I was 8x more likely to have an automobile accident as a result of my sleep disorder. She told me I was actually more awake when I was asleep than when I was supposed to be awake.

I hope this helps. It would be very helpful for your husband to get this test done. Perhaps there is nothing wrong with him. I hope it all works out well for you and for him.

It sounds very much like OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).
Your husband isn't holding his breath, he actually stops breathing. The soft tissues in the throat relax during sleep and actually block the airway.
Sleep Apnea is a dangerous illness that has been linked to high blood pressure, heart failure, and fatigue-related accidents.Your husband should get an appointment for a sleep test.
Sleep Apnea is usually treated in one of two ways:
1) surgery to remove part of the soft palate
2) Use of a CPAP machine, which is a mask- like device that furnishes contstant airflow to keep the airway open.

Hi - My husband has this too - He's a bit overweight though and the doctor says that's the reason he has it. I don't think he holds his breath because it only happens when he lies on his stomach with his face buried in the pillow! It's very scary! Especially in the middle of the night when he realizes he isn't breathing a gasps for air! Make an appt with the doc and in the mean time get him to sleep on his side or back. xxx

It does sound like sleep apnea. He should see a doctor, do a sleep study, and possibly have a CPAP machine, depending on severity. This can seriously detract from other areas of his life if it continues.
