A vegetable is defined as anything Edible that grows, which funny enough includes fruit.
There are various sub classes of VEGGIES. SOme things fall into wierd categories. I listed a few wierd ones for you
FRuit (tomatoes, squash cucumber, apple orange)
Leafy (lettuce)
ROOT (Which includes potatoes)
Nuts(walnuts, chestcuts, avacado)
Legumes(peanuts, peas, beans)

Yes. The difference between a fruit and a veg. is that veg. has to be cooked, fruit can be eaten raw or cooked. Don't eat a raw potato, it is poisoness though not deadly. The person in your answers who says veg grow below ground is not quite correct. A leek is a veg and that grows above ground.
