Heterosexual transmission of HIV has been on the rise for a long time. There are many factors involved. Prostitution and drug abuse have had a major role. These are lifestyles that tend to have a higher degree of other STD's. The other STD's cause sores and breaks in the mucosal lining, allowing easier transmission of the HIV virus. In many parts of the world it is a disgrace to hire a prostitute, therefore many partners are unaware that they may be exposed. Unfortunately, the death of many HIV infected individuals back in the late 80's to early 90's has been forgotten. Too many young people have this feeling of invincability. Recklessness abounds when there are no recent memories of friends and family dying.
