There are other reaons too, apart from the obvious ones.
A lot of people just don't care.
Some people don't even consider it's affects. Some people think "it won't happen to me"
Some people think , we're going to die anyway so I might aswell do what I want. Some people think hey, my grandad smoked for 80 years and he's still going strong, what's the big deal?
Some people frankly don't consider it a risk or don't care
They will even purposely do it to be a risk-taker.
Not to mention with peer pressure it's not only to impress people and fit in. It genuinely brings people together, relieves boredom, gives you something to do.
Take as an example, if you are standing on your own waiting for something or somebody, you don't look so sheepish when you're standing there on your own smoking (engaging in an activity)
Compared to if you had no cigarettes, you'd just be standing around on your own looking a bit stupid.
Most people just do it to find out what it's like for theirselves and either like it (for whatever reason, the image, calming effect etc) or get addicted.

I think the first one is a peer pressure or just a challenge or a curiosity.
Then a few smokes later they've become addicted to the drug nicotine & that's all she wrote.
Smoking cigarettes is the same as sucking on the tail pipe of a car.

For multiple reasons.....and each reason is stupid. I can't understand how people can puff on something that could kill them.
My grandfather died of emphysema (he was a smoker). My other grandfather died of a massive stroke but DRs found a quarter-size tumor in his lung from 40+ years of smoking (it was inoperable because of grandpa's condition).
A good family friend of ours died of lung cancer after he was diagnosed with it about 9 months ago. He smoked up until his diagnosis. Smoking definitely kills.
When I was in college a couple of years ago, I still saw my peers light up. Heck, when I'm at the local trolley station, I see little punk-wannabe rebel kids lighting up like it's no big deal. Smoking doesn't make you look cool; it makes you look stupid. And it's dangerous.

Peer pressure, or curiosity. And the first couple do provide a buzz effect. Too bad that doesn't last, and all you end up with is the addiction.

I think people start because of peer pressure (like teens)...and because it's something they're not supposed to be doing. Like "Look at me, I'm smoking and I'm 13. I'm so grown up." For others, it relieves stress....supposedly.

I quit smoking 25yrs ago
I started from curiousity and wanting to be cool, peer pressure
It's now known that most people who smoke are uneducated--high school education
I call it stupidity on my part

I think everyone has more than one reason to smoke. Relaxing might be one however it's not the cigarette but the fact the person chose to be alone.
The main factor, at least for me, I sadly enjoy it. The taste, the feeling. I wish it wasn't so bad for my health.
GREAT now I have to quit! lol Thanks for reminding me!!!!
Cheers,
