Went to a restaurant tonight and ordered a vegetarian entree to soon discover they gave me a gravy....with meat drippings in it. I found the situation funny on one hand and yet upsetting. I had to send my plate back and have them recook my meal which I felt awful about because the gravy was on other things.

I wasn't really expecting gravy at a chinese place.

Anyone ever go through something like this?

I work at a restaurant. Granted I'm a waitress, but I do see the behind the scenes. I guess my joint is just better quality because even though some food has been sent back, we spend a lot of time making sure it is fantastic the next time around.

Yes, I ordered a salad with no meat on it, since the restaurant menu only had salads with meat on them, for some reason. When it came, it still had little scraps of meat on it from where someone had tried to take the meat off. I guess they were pre-made. I just paid and left without eating it. I heard of one long time vegetarian that sued a restaurant who steamed the vegetables over chicken broth. She ate some before she knew, and got really mad. I've never heard of gravy at a Chinese place, either. They probably didn't even think of gravy as "meat"! But don't feel bad about sending it back. Maybe next time when someone orders something vegetarian there, they will know not to put gravy on everything.

if i EVER have a meal that i might have to "send back" due to preparation...i ASK to stand within eye shot of it being made. ill tell you why.
and i don't want to gross you out...but this is how those jerks at restaurants are.

they act all polite, but as soon as they get the plate back and the are "re-cooking" your meal, along with everyone else's that they now are behind on, because they were stupid the first time around. they sometimes (not always, but more often than you think) will either spit or well....use your imagination, on your food.

sounds gross..but i have a very good friend that works in a restaurant. she told me NEVER to send anything back in that restaurant because of that very reason.
this happens A LOT!

so i always go prepared to still be hungry when i leave. no one respects the vegetarian meal!!
i am ALWAYS asked if i would like chicken on top of my salad...even though i didn't ask for it.
and when i say, no thanks i don't eat meat. they just look at me like I've lost my mind. (I'm from Texas *beef country*...so i get that A LOT).

honestly i would have complained to the manager about that. pointing out that it said VEGETARIAN meal!
and that that wouldn't be acceptable if say an alcoholic beverage ended up in an ex-alcoholics ice-tea. he would be upset. so YOU shouldn't have to pick through your plate.

I'm a vegetarian too, and unfortunately that happens quite a lot, and not just in Chinese restaurants. From reading recipes in magazines and cookbooks you'll find that many seemingly vegetarian dishes are actually made with animal products--for example, mashed potatoes can contain chicken broth.

The only way to be sure what you're eating is truly vegetarian is to only order steamed vegetables, to go to a restaurant that features vegetarian cuisine or to cook at home. Oh, and some Chinese restaurants are vegetarian, or offer a truly vegetarian dish--it'll usually have "Buddhist" or "Lohan" in its name.

they don't care but most places should have some kind of veggie sauce as to cook with, heel when my man cooks me stuff at home he will use the veggie sausage and stuff to add flavor for me.

Yes, I have heard about this happening before. I'm not sure if it is Ignorance or intentional that they sometimes do this.
