STD's typically spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, so wearing a condom can be effective in reducing the risks involved. However, certain STD's (crabs in particular) don't necessarily require the fluid exchange to spread. Theoretically it is possible to get herpes or other STDs from mouth to genital contact also, although probably a bit less likely.

std's that are spread from skin to skin contact such as herpes are not always preventable w/ a condom. your partner could have an outbreak on the outer area of the penis and the condom cannot protect
