Last week, I decided I wanted to become a vegetarian and so far I have been doing well. I haven't eaten any chicken, beef, pork, or seafood. But what should I eat to help keep my protein level where it should be? I'm not a vegan, so don't tell me I cant eat eggs or drink milk!

I don't recommend it but if you eat milk, eggs and cheese you have already have your complete proteins. Other vegan sources of complete protein include soy, tofu, hemp seed, spirulina, and the grain quinoa. If you mix beans and rice, or wheat and cheese, these also make complete proteins.

Do what you can now and little by little encourage yourself to make healthier choices. Milk products will produce an incredible amount of mucus causing, sinus infections, earaches, and other illnesses, so if you do indulge try to keep it to a limit. There is also a link between milk products and cancer, especially breast cancer.

I would try to include as many fresh veggies as you can handle and watch out for the processed foods. If you need to for whatever amount of time try the meatless burgers and dogs. I like the garden burger variety. You can live quite a while in balance eating these as your base and they are easy to make. Try to get some recipe ideas and try something new at least once week.

Remember these things take time. It doesn't happen over night. With each day you will learn you tricks and useful information. Good luck & keep it up.

Anything but meat. Be careful though. A lot of food products have chicken or beef stock or byproducts in them. Check out some of the vegetarian website to help you decipher the "meat" lingo in food products.

Be sure to keep your protein intake up. Eggs are good for that.

Get "Diet for a Small Planet" from the library. It has lots of good nutritional information on the subject.

You need to learn about combining grains and legumes, which make a complete rotein between them...

And as for those who say vegetarians can eat fish...since when is fish NOT an animal???

I know there are those who claim to be vegetarians, and who eat fish...but that makes them mistaken about what they are, not vegetarians. (They are people who don't eat mammals and birds maybe, but not vegetarians)

Vegetarians do not eat anything with eyes and a brain (even small brains).

Vegetarianism is very unhealthy. In order to eat a viable diet that won't make you get sick, you need to follow certain strict rules about what you MUST eat. Go to amazon.com and buy a book on this. If you don't, eventually you WILL get sick (actually, your body will force you to eat meat before that happens).

Even if you eat correctly, your diet will never be high quality. It will be better than people who subsist on junk food but it won't have the nutrients of a healthy, well balanced diet.

i used to make vegetarian pizzas and enchiladas. steamed or fried veggies and some cheese. it makes a great meal and it's filling. as for protein, yeah, eggs are great, but there is so much more like cheese and yogurt. and just so you know.. you need to make sure you're completely balanced. protein is a very small portion of what makes you healthy. vegetarianism can be dangerous if you don't do lots of research.

Peanut butter is a great sources of protein. When I was pregnant, eating meat of any type, whether pork, beef or chicken, made me sick. My doctor advised me to eat peanut butter.
