there are two types of diabetes, type I and type II...

they may both be inherited, however, type II has a stronger inheritance pattern...

i have Type 1 Diabetes. No one in my family ever had it. Same with many diabetics I know. But i also know a family 3 of their 8 daughters have type 1 diabetes. Someone in my family had type 2, but the two are not related.

Studies have shown that Diabetes is passed down through heredity. If one of your family members has it, you may want to get checked regularly. I have a type 2 which is just diet controlled, my Grandmother had type one and sister has type two as well. As you get older, the chance increases along with the chance for a heart attack, strokes and blindness all associated with Diabetes. Keep a watchful eye on it- get tested regularly!

I knew a brother and sister who both had Type I diabetes. Both diagnosed around the age of 12, but no family history of it.
