Here's my story: When my daughter informed my husband and I that she wasn't going to eat meat any longer - he and I were still meat eaters then, we aren't anymore! - we respected her choice. However, she was only 9 and acted like a 9 year old and wanted to live on cheese fries! She wouldn't eat vegetables, even though I tried to find all different kinds of vegetables for her to eat. She wouldn't eat fruit, either. She just kept losing weight because I refused to allow her to live on quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches! My sister came over with a trunk-load full of the vegetarianmeals options and meat replacement foods. Fake bacon, chickenless chicken nuggets, etc! We used those foods to ease her into a better way of eating. Now, at 13, she cooks for herself, for her father, me, her sister even. We all eat vegetarian, which she started us on, and we are all healthier people and more ethically right with the world!

So here's my advice: First, do your research. Show your family that you KNOW what you're doing and you aren't just trying some fad! Show them, don't tell them, why this is important to you by being mature about it. I could have been really iritated with my daughter because she was such a little brat about the whole thing. But I grew up with a vegetarian sister and had been engaged to a vegetarian (and been mostly veg myself at the time, of course) for 10 years! So I was sympathetic. But most meat eaters aren't going to be so symnpathetic. They will tell you you need protien to be healthy and other BS like that! Your family will think you want them to accomadate you like I did my daughter, too. But I bet they won't be willing to! Who would, it's a nightmare! My husband was SO frustrated with our daughter, and rightly so!

So go to the library and get some books. There are so mahy great ones for teens! When you do eat with the family, eat all the vegetables and fruits, and politely pass on the meat. Don't be rude and insensitive to the person who made the meal by making faces and having a tantrum about carrots touching meat, at least not at first! LOL Try winning them over, rather than whining at them! I bet it works.

Good luck.

Look for "The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook" by Judy Krizmanic. It is specially designed for teens who have decided to become vegetarians in a family who does not eat this way. There is a lot of advice from teens in there too.

The book tells you where to buy food, what to buy, defines terms that may be new to you, recipes created by teens and also gives you options for being either Vegan or Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian with each recipe.

It helps you maintain a healthy diet and even has some "insanely easy" recipes for days when you don't feel like cooking.

My advice would be eat healthy, base your diet on fruits and veggies if you wish, but please include alittle bit of meat everyone in a while. You are still a little young to give up that kind of protein.
Mid teens are a very important time reguarding long term bone strength and meat and dairy are vital..

The supposed benefits of not eating meat are almost all false, however, the wide range of vegetables in a veggie die can be beneficiary in a diet, you don't have to omit meat to get those though.

1. why? Its not as healthy as its touted to be.
Enjoy all food in moderation is far superior than locking yourself into one area.
I'd start by just eating less if you're concerned about weight and working outside or just working more.

well, let them know how you feel, and research recipes so you can help cook meals (ie, ones that can be either meat OR veg). maybe simply cook meals for yourself & buy your own groceries if you have to.
