My Mother was a type 1 diabetic at the age of 40-something, my brother the second child is a type 1 at the age of 23, and I am a type 1 started at the age of 13-14 I was the 9th kid none of the others show any signs of type 1 or 2. Now that we are all in our 40's and 50's its still not a sure bet that the other 9 won't get it. Nobody ALWAYS gets anything, its the luck of the draw, science still has not found that one and not the other will get any disease even the brand new ones that are popping up.
Yes you can eat healthy, exercise and stay thin but that still won't protect you IF you are going to get it you will its that simple.

For the prevention of diabetes in children & young adults its the same chances... but.... parents really need to take note of what the Doctors are saying kids are getting diabetes younger and younger. Fat kids more than the thin ones. That is something that can and should be changed. I know what they are serving in the schools now a days is not a healthy noon meal & no telling what is served at home for breakfast & dinner. PE is not manitory any more in fact its not a subject until 6 or 7th grade in our district. I know its not the schools fault they are a bussiness, the parents need to over see what the schools are cutting out and replace them.

Diabetes

Definition:

Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both.

Alternative Names:
Diabetes mellitus
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

To understand diabetes, it is important to first understand the normal process of food metabolism. Several things happen when food is digested:

A sugar called glucose enters the bloodstream. Glucose is a source of fuel for the body.
An organ called the pancreas makes insulin. The role of insulin is to move glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.
People with diabetes have high blood glucose. This is because their pancreas does not make enough insulin or their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally, or both.

There are three major types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood. The body makes little or no insulin, and daily injections of insulin are required to sustain life. Without proper daily management, medical emergencies can arise.
Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1 and makes up 90% or more of all cases of diabetes. It usually occurs in adulthood. Here, the pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to the insulin. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it, although it is a serious condition. Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common due to the growing number of older Americans, increasing obesity, and failure to exercise.
Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at any time during pregnancy in a person who does not have diabetes.
Diabetes affects about 17 million Americans. There are many risk factors for diabetes, including:

A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
Obesity
Age greater than 45 years
Some ethnic groups (particularly African-Americans and Hispanic Americans)
Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
High blood pressure
High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)
High blood cholesterol level
The American Diabetes Association recommends that all adults be screened for diabetes at least every three years. A person at high risk should be screened more often.

Diabetes
Prevention:

Maintaining an ideal body weight and an active lifestyle may prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Currently there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes.

For more information or the exact diabetes your father has look in this site for more information?

I don't think 3rd child always gets it,that's nonsense. His genetics is not "aware" of the fact that he has 2 elder brothers. You may have heard that 1 child out of 3 gets diabetes from a diseased parent, which is completely different,it is only a statistic which means that you have 33% a chance to get it.All of you have the same chances to get diabetes,so you had better watch your diet, all of you.The fact that he's fat is not necessarily related to diabetes, although this might indicate that he eats lots of sweets and that COULD trigger the disease. My grandfather also has diabetes,he had 2 children and none of them has it.He also has 3 grandchildren which don't have the disease so far(we are 15, 20 and 21yrs old).In fact, diabetes is never transmited genetically as a disease, but only as a predisposition to get the disease if one is not careful.Take care.

Type 2 Diabetes is hereditary. You don't say what kind your father has. There is no truth about the "3rd child" myth that you are talking about. All of you are at risk of getting diabetes and therefore you must all eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and visit your doctor on a routine basis. There is no sense in living a life full of worry when you can prevent the onset of diabetes by living a healthy lifestyle.

Yes, genetics don't automatically single out a person for good genes because they were born third, unfortunately.

The fact your brother is already fat may indicate he has a pre-diabetic condition called hyperinsulinemia.

If he does, and you can get more info about blood sugar imbalances at www.hufa.org, then a proper diet for all of you may prevent a lot of problems. If your dad is on a diet to cut sugar, added and natural, out of his food, to lower his blood sugar, then that is the diet you and your brother should be on too.

You can't prevent - only control, a blood sugar imbalance.

Overweight people are generally at risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. It's always a good idea to try and eat healthily, get lots of exercise and take care of yourself. Unfortunately diabetes is hereditary so, the chances are that all of you might get it and with your dad having it, I'd regularly have my blood sugar levels checked and live healthily.

Diabetes is heriditary. You can not avoid it, just delay it. Diet, exercise, and weight control are key. Why? Because they keep the receptor sites on the cells open. We consume glucose, the pancreas releases insulin and carries the glucose to our cells. The receptor sites on the cells open and allows the glucose in to be metabolized properly. When the receptor sites do not open, the glucose stays in the bloodstream. Thus, high blood sugar. When we exercise, it opens more receptor sites on the cells allowing the insulin in.

Sorry to assert, yet there's a extra ideal danger of you getting it if someone on your family individuals has it. the right thanks to circumvent that is to no longer have the form of huge sugar intake, and if you're overweight, then free a pair pounds. So, popular, the healither you're, the a lot less in all probability you receives Diabities.
