My girlfriend, who is an Indian from India, makes me dinner once a week. She seems to take dirt out of the flower pots and fry it with goat's milk. I think it tastes terrible, but she seems to like it. Is this a standard Indian dish or should I be concerned that she is an imposter?

It is possible that the following recipe is something like what she is preparing and therefore, at least in this instance, negates the theory she is an imposter...

Name of the recipe - Carrot Kheer

Ingredients

Carrot Kheer

pinch saffron
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 Cup ghee
2 cups carrots, peeled and finely grated
8 cups goat's milk
1 heaping teaspoon charole nuts (optional)
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1 cup Sucanat or other sugar (or to taste)

Method of Preparation

Soak the saffron in 1 tablespoon of goat's milk for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a pot on low heat and add the ghee. Stir in the carrots and keep stirring until they are light brown and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Pour in the milk, then add the charole nuts, cardamom, soaked saffron and sugar. Stir a few times and bring to a boil. Continue to stir as it thickens, to keep it from sticking. Cook and stir for 5 minutes on a low boil. Cook longer if you want it a little thicker . Can be served either warm or cool. You can cut the quantities in half.

Note:
Kapha can eat this occasionally, especially if it is made with goat's milk. Charole nuts can be purchased at Indian grocery stores.

You say that "She SEEMS to take dirt" ... but do you actually SEE her do that? Or is it just that the flavour and texture of the food reminds you of dirt?????

I should hope that she's just an incredibly bad cook - but if you DO see her take the dirt then why the heck do you EAT it?????!!!

Ask her what it is that you're eating, she'll probably tell you that she's trying to make a specific dish but doesn't have the correct ingredients. If that's the case, you can ask what the special ingredients are that she needs, and maybe buy them for her or WITH her (they might be too expensive, especially if she's a student...)

I saw a story on the discovery channel once about a little girl who lived in a clay house and ate her roof off. Wierd.

It is not dirt; it is a form of clay. I remember when some Southern Blacks gathered the light streak from the red clay. It was a cure for many ailments.
