In a nut shell....YES!
Although it is difficult for blood borne viruses (ie. HIV and Hep B and C etc) to be passed through fellatio (male oral sex) it hasn't been ruled out altogether.
HPV (genital warts) is also a risk.
Perhaps the biggest risk of all, and one that has so far not been mentioned, is Chlamydia.
Although not the most harmful sexually transmitted disease, it is the most common and is carried in the mouth as well as the genitals. It can also infect the eyes, leading to very nasty eye infections.
If you were to receive oral sex from someone carrying this std in their mouth you would invariably contract it yourself.
However, you can use a condom like others have advised and this will protect both parties.
When you are sure of your partners monogamy and trust that they are not infected with any BBV or STD, only then should you move on to unprotected oral sex.
I know it's a pain, and some feel that it distracts from the moment and the intimacy, but think of the alternative.
If your partner cares about their own sexual health they will agree to using protection, and this can be valuable insight into how they conducted themselves during previous sexual encounters.
I hope this helps. Good luck and stay safe!

If you think oral action is "safer sex," you're very mistaken. Here's what the dangers are and how to protect yourself.

HPV
If you give oral sex to a guy with the HPV virus, you can get the virus in your throat and mouth. Symptoms include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and visible growths. (HPV is also linked to oral cancer, although it's rare.)

Herpes
You can catch oral herpes from performing fellatio on a guy with genital herpes and catch genital herpes when a guy with oral herpes heads south.

HIV
Although rare, it is possible to catch the HIV virus from giving and receiving oral sex. If there are tiny cuts in your mouth, the virus can enter your bloodstream through them, and if he has any sores in his mouth, he could infect you while giving oral sex.

Other Infections
When performing oral sex, you can contract hepatitis B or an oral case of gonorrhea.

How to Stay Safe
Doctors recommend you use a condom when you're giving oral sex and a dental dam when you're on the receiving end, though many couples find this unappealing. The only perfect protection is sticking with a partner who is monogamous and STD free.

In spite of what you may have heard, exchange of body fluids...sperm, saliva, blood, mucus, etc. is always a risky business. While the risk of HIV from oral sex is small, other diseases are more readily transmitted, and there are several that cause pain, and some lead to death.

Yes - you can still contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) like AIDS by recieving oral sex.

Using a condom makes it safer but still not 100%. The only thing that's 100% safe is abstinence.

Know your partner...

Possibly. The mouth contains more bacteria than any other part of the body (I think). Thing's like Herpes could be passed on I would imagine.

Just as risky, especially if you have a small cut in your mouth and it is i direct route into your system.

Not as much as it is for the woman doing it to you. There is less inside a mouth than on a penis

It is possible to pick up herpes if the giver has it. Other than that or some other disease of the mouth it is safe.
