Yep. The chemical agent is in the fruit. That's why farms pick fruit before it's ripe, so that by the time it's shipped it's at the right ripeness. Some fruit ripening can be retarded with refrigeration, some can be accelerated (like put an apple in a bag with fruit you want to ripen, and the apple's chemicals affect the other fruit).

Fruit falls off the tree only once it is fully ripe. When it lands, it soon begins to rot due to heat, moisture, insects and bacteria in the ground. Harvested fruit is picked right before it is fully ripe, and if properly stored will continue to ripen. Once you've refrigerated it, it is no longer able to continue ripening, to ripen fruit allow it to sit at room temp. in a cool room. Ideally by a window, Just for a day or so.

yep, (IE: bananas turn brown, apples turn soft and mushy, oranges turn hard, etc,etc,etc) that's why the farmers send a lot of them partly ripen to market so they will ripen when they get there

yes ... try bananas, for instance. I normally buy them green at the store, and they ripen on my counter.

yeah peaches are pretty hard when you buy them from the store but they get softer and riper with time
if you leave them out they get over ripe mushy and not good at all
