Some friends of mine and I once did a "faux formal" dinner. We used the theme of The Great Gatsby and everybody had to go to Salvation Army or Goodwill for their costumes. Was a hoot just trying to find the right costumes. You could do this with any theme actually, I guess.

I did a birthday dinner for ten with an Italian theme-- but I wanted it to stay subtle and fun (no costumes, etc).

I made homemade gourmet pizza (recipe from the Barefoot Contessa Parties), gnocchi with lemon aioli dipping sauce (Secrets from a Caterers Kitchen), and the strawberry country cake (from Barefoot Contessa). I was new to cooking so I'm sure you can find more sophisticated Tuscan-themed foods on epicurious.com or elsewhere. But I will say that everything I made was easy to prep before-hand so I was able to enjoy the party.

Beverages: I served San Pellegrino orange and lemon sodas (easy to find at Trader Joe's), Italian sparkling water, Italian wines, and Campari.

For Dessert: An easy and very Italian dessert is biscotti (again, great recipes on epicurious.com) with Vin Santo (an Italian dessert wine)

Decor: Lots of fresh flowers and candles. I kept the theme pretty low key, but I put pretty cards at each person's place with something absurd in Italian. I put a few of these around the apartment as well.

Music: I had so much fun with this. I put together a mix of opera (heavy on the Puccini), Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andrea Bocelli, the theme from the Sopranos, and Rosemary Clooney's "Mambo Italiano."

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I once went to a Gilligan's Island theme party. Every guest had to come as a character from the TV show. Of course, there were a couple of each of the characters, but it was fun trying to decide who was the best Ginger or Professor. Everyone loved it.

Karoake is always fun. Game nights would be fun - have some fun traditional board games, dice games, gambling games. Casino Royale would be fun - use green felt for the table cloth, scatter poker chips and playing cards and dice along the table. Then playing poker, pokeno, roulette, craps afterwards. Give each guest a little bag full of say 20-50 poker chips. Whoever has the most chips at the end of the night wins a prize, and also whoever has the least chips wins a consolation prize.
