I do not smoke and I do not support smoking. But I like to answer on behalf of smokers.

Smokers are non-smokers in the beginning. They start smoking due to up-bringing, environment, stress, curiousity and/or peer pressure.

The first puff is usually a turn-off. But once, they decided to take the 2nd puff, the 3rd & 4th will follow after. And they start smoking ever since.

Once smokers, it's hard to quit due to withdrawal symptoms e.g. bad temper, giddy, not well, feeling lousy, feeling empty, feeling stressed... It varies from person to person.

When they smoke, they never thought of the consequences of smoking & 2nd-hand smoke, they are already "high" or numbing their senses to distract them from the daily stress they're facing. Sadly, it's usually their way of coping stress and not considering the after effects of smoking at all. So, loved ones do give them gentle reminders to show you care. Don't nag.

Dear Smokers,

I strongly urge smokers to think before they light up & take a puff. Think about yourself, your family, your friends & the people that's around you as you sit at a cafe, at a pub, at a bus-stop, anywhere you go.

Yourself: You'll stink from head to toe. Your breath, fingers & clothes too. You keep coughing as though you have some kind of disease. Not attractive at all. Your teeth turn yellow/brown/black. You'll have more wrinkles faster. You age faster. Your organs are being compromised in a smoky damaging body system. Each cigarette shortens few minutes of your life proven by scientific studies.

Family: Your family has to breathe in 2nd-hand smoke, which can cause asthma & cancer too. And pay for your medical expenses eventually.

Friends/Others: They have to bear with your smoking & smell. And may avoid you.

So think twice, if not 3 times, many many times before you take another puff.

Addiction is the main reason. I've never smoked but my mom did until a year and a half ago and she said quitting was the hardest thing she's ever done. Her fiancee tried to quit with her and was successful for a few months but went back to it. Nicotine is more addictive than most drugs and your brain becomes dependent on it. One of my cousins has tried to quit at least twice but has gone back to smoking after a few days because the addiction is too hard to break. The gum, patches, filters, etc do not work for everyone. Another reason for not quitting is because for most smokers smoking is a way to relax and reduce stress. They can get away for a few minutes (longer if smoking a cigar or a pipe) and not think about anything. There's also the social aspect of it. If friends are smoking also or there's a family gathering where family members are smoking, a smoker will want to go out and smoke with them. Some just plain like doing it and when starting most do it because they find it "cool" or under peer pressure because their friends or someone they look up to does it. And as another answerer mentioned, some do it because it is their way to keep weight off. Nicotine suppresses appetite. However, appetite can be supressed by sticking to foods rich in protein which fill you up fast without eating too much, and regular exercise allows you to eat just about anything you'd like in moderation. In short, everyone knows the risks and that cigarettes are extremely harmful (and expensive!). Heck, they're on every pack. Most choose to ignore the risks or think they're above it and nothing will happen to them.

I smoke, and I've smoked for about 15 years. I still do it because I just don't care that it's bad for me. There are way too many things nowadays that are bad for you, including stuff that the government claims is healthy. I may as well go out happy and doing the things I like to do, as opposed to living a possibly longer, boring life full of restrictions. I'm not advising anyone else to smoke, just telling you why I do.

I smoke, and I hate it. Your obviously not a smoker to ask such a question. As far as I know no one actually enjoys smoking, Its more of a tool utilized in order to relieve stress. That may sound far-fetched, but lets not be too critical of something we don't understand. I have a challenge for you, Smoke 3 cigarettes a day for 5 years and try to stop... its not that easy. Smoking is highly, addictive, physically and mentally. I hate it when people criticize me for smoking as If i felt good about ripping my lungs apart, caughing-up giant yellow, red, and black loogies that stick to car window like bird terds. not to mention having the anxiety feeling of knowing I smell like cigarette smoke, have off-white teeth, yellow fingernails etc. At this point a smoker would get even more anxiety and resort to smoking a cigarette.

Although, I do find it interesting how the younger generations find smoking to be absolutely disguisting, TV and School has brainwashed kids AGAIN and now my 15 year old brother trash talks me, my mom, and other smoking buddies for smoking cigarette -as I imagine the majority of your responses will support ANti-Smoking mentalities as well. True It's a good thing but at the same time It makes it even harder for the smoker to stop smoking when everyones throwing stones at him for smoking... catch my drift. So I lay here with my scars, wallow in my pool of blood, caughing up loogies, defeated by the mob of none smokers who are desperate to rid the world of the poisonous gases that comes in pretty packaging, hell... I'm gonna go burn a one now...

P.S. :SMOKERS I FEEL YOUR PAIN

Because they're addicted, of course. Of course, it's always possible to quit. Anyone can do it, you just have to really try. People who continue to smoke despite knowing the terrible effects have no respect for themselves and therefore don't have any desire to save themselves from a slow, painful, miserable death.

nope i don't smoke.
smoking is very addictive. if you do smoke, it makes you think that you will not survive without it -- that is called addiction.
it's not a substance that cures your "sanity" -- it's the addiction that's making you feel ill.
i don't force people to quit smoking, but i do encourage them by educating them on the serious effects of smoking. but because of the addiction, nobody is willing to listen and i've finally given up. now i'd say "whatever, screw your life if you must -- i'll be waiting for you"

smoking is an addiction just like any other drug. I inhaled my 1st cigarette when I was 9 yrs old and I'm 36 now. Tried to quit many times as I hate the taste and the smell.

I continue to smoke even though I know that it is the one main leading causes of cancer. I even continue to smoke even though I have a lot of cancer that runs in my family, even my oldest daughter who is 9 years old suffered from ALL. The reason why besides the fact that it is a habit is because I enjoy smoking or at least I have trained my body to enjoy smoking.

no i do not smoke, but here is why people do...because when they place that cigarette between their lips and feel the menthol, between on their lips it feels nice, when they light it up and take that first long drag, and knowing its filling there lungs, it tastes good, a cigarette does not talk back, it comforts, and yes it will kill you, but it is also the first thing people want to put in there mouth for pleasure and comfort when all else lets you down. in closing people smoke because they like it.
