The indian snack pakora can be translated as vegetable fritters. They can be made with onions, italian chillies, potatoes, aubergines, cauliflower and what not...The basic idea is to dip the vegetable slice in a batter made of groundnut powder, salt, cayanne, asafoetida(an indian spice) and water. You can also add mint/coriander leaves into it.
It can also be made of indian cottage cheese, paneer, leftover rice, etc etc.The fritters are made by deep frying in a pan.
The best combination is hot pakoras, indian chai and mint chutney/tomato sauce.
Alternatively, you could use all purpose flour also, instead of groundnut powder. If you add a little rice flour into it, it will come out real crisp.

Pakoras are in Indian savory. They are my specialty. I use chick-pea flour with certain Indian spices, a little ghee, and some water and make a thick mixture, and I dip in either sliced zucchini squash, or onions, or cauliflower pieces, or tomatoe wedges,, or sliced bell pepper, or mushrooms...whatever, and then I deep fry it in hot ghee. So so yummy (as someone has already said). Sometimes I make a sour cream dip. Or a tamarind sauce to dip my pakoras in. Pick up a good Indian cookbook somewhere, and you'll see alot of good recipies for savories.
