The indian snack pakora can be translated as vegetable fritters. They can be made with onions,italian chillies,potatoes,aubergines,cauliflower and what not...The basic idea is to dip the vegetable slice in a batter made of groundnut powder,salt,cayanne,asafoetida(an indian spice) and water. You can also add mint/coriander leaves into it.
It can also be made of indian cottage cheese, paneer, leftover rice,etc etc.The fritters are made by deep frying in a pan.
The best combination is hot pakoras, indian chai and mint chutney/tomato sauce.
Alternatively, you could use all purpose flour also, instead of groundnut powder. If you add a little rice flour into it, it will come out real crisp.

Pakoras are in Indian savory. They are my specialty. I use chick-pea flour with certain Indian spices, a little ghee, and some water and make a thick mixture, and I dip in either sliced zucchini squash, or onions, or cauliflower pieces, or tomatoe wedges,, or sliced bell pepper, or mushrooms...whatever, and then I deep fry it in hot ghee. So so yummy (as someone has already said). Sometimes I make a sour cream dip. Or a tamarind sauce to dip my pakoras in. Pick up a good Indian cookbook somewhere, and you'll see alot of good recipies for savories.
