E. coli is one of the many different bacteria that can cause ventilator associated pneumonia. The most common route for the bacteria to gain access to the lungs is through, or around the outside of, the endotracheal tube (the tube in the throat connecting the person to the ventilator).

E coli is not normally found in the lungs. It can end up in the lungs as a result of sepsis - when the E coli organism ends up in the blood stream. One way to get E Coli sepsis is after an extremely bad untreated UTI. This is not the normal consequence of most individuals with a UTI however. This is more likely the result of a person that has an indwelling catheter or elderly or debilitated individual in a nursing facility. The organism is usually found in feces.
