I think information that is available for people ailing from any disease should be given this information. Although I do have insurance, I have not met my deductible and this class would cost me $500.00. Just makes me wonder, If I were financialy able, I would pay this amount and use it to manage my disease. If I were poor, then medicaid and/or other social services would pay the bill. But, since I do not fall into these catagories, I guess I'll deal with it on my own.

You don't need a class, especially not one so expensive.

You can get as much information you need for free on line.

Instead of going to the self management class. You should get a referal to speak with Nutritionists and an Endocrinologist. You can find very helpful information on the american diabetes association website. You may find a free management class at you local hospital or support group. Look into those first.

The class is free at hospitals and such. Many such classes can cost $$$ because you are the only student and it's tailored for your needs. Check out local hospital and clinic services for diabetic support groups. I stated in such a class for several weeks and did the research in a local library. There's lots of help on the Internet as well, especially from companies that supply diabetic needs. The next place you can seek support is from you doctor, specifically an endocrinolist. His/her staff can do the training as well because many are "CDE" [certified diabetic educators]. You can check insulin pump suppliers for a schedule of their classes - also free - and they do real practical training in their demo of their products. I've been to several and pick up something new each time. There's lots of info available for free, you just have to find it.

Diabetes is a big business in this country. Insurance companies do not care about diabetics. If you do go to classes don't accept the free One Touch meter, the strips are prohibitvley expensive. Target has a meter that is less than $20 and the strips are half the cost. One Touch wants you to spend mucho bucks on the strips so they give you your first meter so they can rope you in.
