it's all part of his 'mild-mannered-reporter' gig.
Don't you think that if a neighbour came around to borrow sugar they might notice that he doesn't have a stove?
Besides, when entertaining, it would be rude to stay in the kitchen blowing on all the food rather than mixing with guests. Must keep up appearances.
