Third day of coughing, chest pain/burning and onset of fever. This is my third time getting bronchitis in about 4-5 months, I'm 23 and have smoked cigarettes for a little over a year. (I have decided as of yesterday to quit smoking. Yes, I know I shouldn't be smoking. My mom died of lung cancer last year a the age of 47 and my maternal grandmother was diagnosed with emphysema this year.) I feel like crap and am tired of getting sick and am wondering if anyone thinks I may have chronic bronchitis. (Side note, I am already on an antibiodic Keflex for an unrelated infection. Why would I get bronchitis while I am on this drug since it is supposed to help clear it up?)

Yes it sounds like you have chronic bronchitis. If not you are well on your way there. It's good that you are stopping smoking, it will help.
The reason that you might be getting this even though you are on antibiotics, is because the infection you have is immune to Keflex, or that it just doesn't kill the kind of infection that you have. There are different antibiotics for different infections.

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!

The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!

I'm thinking that your original bout of bronchitis is just flaring back up. Keflex may not be the right antibiotic for bronchitis. Normally, I'm prescribed Zithromax Zpaks when I get it.

you are very smart to have stopped smoking. That is the best thing you can do when you have respiratory problems. You probably do have bronchitis, and seeing that your mother had and your grandmother have respiratory problems that is good cause for you to have them. Get a diagnosis from a good doctor.

you probably just have irritation in your bronchial tubes, you need inhaled steroids until irritation is gone, anti-biotics will help prevent associated infections,if not inhaled steroids then a steroid dose pak would be beneficial with a Z-pak to nip this at the bud! if in a week you see no results it may be allergies, then go to an allergy and asthma specialist, they have more advice on these situations than family physicians!

technically no. you could have bronchitis but not chronic bronchitis. for it to be considered chronic you would have to have it in 2 consecutive years.
