There are usually sampler platters
that come with 2 of almost everything.
This is fun to try, especially
with someone else who's never tried sushi
and you both each try a piece of
everything, and get a feel for what you
do like.
Mostly though, like people have already said
you will probably like just the different
rolls. I was intriduced to sushi
with the sample platter, but
I would have tried one with different
rolls this time instead of the
eels and squid and stuff
they are horrible and rubbery,
or tasteless at best.
Trying all the different rolls
would probably be a much more
enjoyable expereience.
and don't bother with saki
that stuff is hideous.

Mmmm....sushi is delicious. I recommend trying the California roll, which consists of crab (imitation) mixed with mayo sometimes, avacado, and sesame seeds. The good thing about the california roll is that it is prepared so the rice is on the outside, making it easy to bite into. I prefer just to pop the whole thing in my mouth. Another delicious sushi roll to try is the Philadelphia roll. This consists of smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber and green onion. It's bigger and the seaweed is on the outside, but delicious nonetheless.

When I first started eating sushi I stuck to the california roll and eventually branched out. I would suggest trying anything with tuna in it if you want to go straight for the raw stuff, cause tuna is pretty mild in flavor. Make sure you go at it with an open mind! Enjoy!

Try something that is made using ingredients you are familiar with. Maybe smoked salmon or teriyaki chicken. Dip it in a little soy. Stay away from the ginger and wasabi (the pink stuff and the pale green stuff) for your first tim, but you may want to try them later if you find you have a taste for it. There is nothing to fear and it really is a wonderful snack or light meal.

Just stick to California rolls. Most people won't try sushi cause they think it raw fish or weird stuff. If you can get them started on stuff they already know and like it's easy. I have won over many converts with boston rolls ( cream cheese + cucumber) with the nori inside. Most people love it!

If you are afraid of the raw stuff, then pick only the following:
1. Tamago (cooked egg)
2. Unagi (cooked eel)
3. Anago (cooked river eel)
4. California maki (cooked crabstick with avocado and mayo)
5. Futomaki
6. Deep fried softshell crab
7. Handrolls

lol, jks ... personally, i did not like sushi the first (and only) time i tried it .. in fact, it was so bad for me, tears came into my eyes .. however, you might actually end up loving it! i would suggest that you stay away from raw sushi the first time, and stick to the cooked variety! good luck! :D
