Ha, no not really. Next time I have some kinda lung infection, I'll just rub some neosporin on my ribs...
Seriously, try squeezing out some fresh onion juice into a cup (only several drops), extract it with a dropper and put two drops in each ear about 2-3 times a day. You'll be surprised how fast it goes away! It works all the time. And no, it doesn't sting. Antibiotics are not good to take for everything in the world. Natural methods work far better (and FASTER) as they strengthen our OWN immune systems to fight of foreign germs.
Onion and garlic have natural antibiotic properties to fight off infection. That's also why grandma's chicken soup helps you feel better when you're sick. (Shhhh...her secret ingredients are onions and garlic!)
Give it a try; it works!
PS. Good luck trying Petlover's remedy. It sure sounds like torture. I wonder if she meant rubbing the Vicks on the inside (omg) or the outside of the throat...??

i get outer ear infections all the time..and yes neosporin works!! put some on a qtip and apply to the ear canal every 3-4 hours for 5 days. take ibuprofin for pain. outer ear infections hurt a heck of a lot more than middle ear infections (the ones behind the ear drum) and will be mad painful for upto 3 days. Definitely have your doc check it out if you want drops but i have had them so often and can tell when its outer vs. middle that i know the drill and start neosporin as soon as the pain hits.

Actually, Neomycin and Polymyxin B, two of the active ingredients in triple antibiotics such as Neosporin are commonly used to empirically treat uncomplicated otitis externa (outer ear infection). While it is true that some natural treatments do work, thats different than saying all natural agents are better and stronger than all synthetic agents or vice versa. I once saw a patient with highly advanced breast cancer who had been duped into spending tons of money on some so called "natural treatment" by some con who later fled the country to avoid prosecution. I can't blame the patient though because the thought of having a mastectomy and being pumped full of chemo can be terrifying but some scumbag took advantage of her desperateness. Also, just because something is "natural" doesn't mean its safer. If you think about it Nicotine is natural and Morphine, Codine, and Heroin are all natural drugs found in opium and they are very dangerous. On a last note, it's been my experience that people with the most condescending or highly opinionated answers are usually wrong.

I'm not a trained medical professional, but can probably tell you that no, it won't help to reduce the pain. Neosporin is for cuts and scrapes, not inflammation and swelling associated with ear pain. I suggest you see a doctor as soon as possible since an ear infection usually does not cure itself and damage can be done to the ear drum if left unattended, not to mention excruciating pain and discomfort. To relieve the pain, the best thing that has worked is to rest your ear on a heating pad or use a washcloth saturated with warm water to rest on your ear. A hot water bottle can help too. Take a decongestant since your inner ear canal is probably inflamed and see your doctor pronto! I hope this helps.

RE:
Will neosporin help an ear infection?
(ONLY TRAINED MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS NEED REPLY)
If I feel the onset fo an ear infection, will slathering the outside of my ear (Not the lobe, but around the entrance to ear canal) in neosporin or some other type of topical antibiotic help repel / prevent the infection?

No, neosporin or the like will not help unless it is an external wound/infection. Even then you might need an antibiotic dependent on the severity. Anywho, what you have described sounds internal. Try a few tabs of antihistamine to sort of drain your sinuses. If it is still bothering you, go to a doctor for an exam!

You might have better luck if you tried my grandmother's trick of swabbing the throat - she used to use Vicks but you could use the Neosporin. You might have to have somebody hold you down to do this: Have your helper put a gob of Neosporin on a tissue and then have them rub the back of your throat with it. If you don't gag - the Neosporin will probably be in closer proximity to the inner ear than putting it on the outside of the ear. I don't know how many cures grandma got with this procedure but we never complained around her of a sore throat or ear ache!

I have a son, Joey Niceforo, who is a young 27 year old tenor, with a group called "DESTINO" recording in Vancouver Bc, Canada.
For the last few weeks Joey has had a cold. Just a few days ago he developed an ear ache, a swollen ear and loss of hearing. He was diagnosed with serous otitis media (middle ear infection).
The major concern we have is that Joey and the Group DESTINO have been booked to open the Marie Osmond show in Disney World on April 3,
Have a quick remedy for our son??
Joey's ear got better just before flying.
He also got the special ear plugs for flying, and arrived in Florida, from Vancouver, on April 1st. On April 2nd he told us the ear was almost 100 percent, and he will, with the other, great DESTINO tenors be performing, in the COLORADO BALL ROOM DISNEY WORLD tonight at 7 pm.
This help was so effective, and helpful, to our young Canadian tenor, Joey Niceforo. I'm sure this input and therapy advice will, and has helped others.

nope. neosporin is too thick and will not get into the ear canal because of its thickness. if you try to get it in there, you may damage your ear. most ear infections are treated with antiobiotic ear drops used a couple of times per day, and are inexpensive to buy although they do require a doctor's prescription.
