this is america. if i want to eat a dog, damnit, who are you to push your "values" on me? not only is it "wrong" in this country, but illigal. what is that about? how did dogs get this immunity from our dinner table? and why do we look at asian countries with distain because they eat dogs? they might taste good..and don't give me that "because they are pets" argument because anything can be a pet and some people have pigs as pets, so that is silly. and what about pet fish?

Americans are funny, they would forbid a dog's meat, but are eating dolphins, sharks, whales, of course they abhore it , but still they allow to import such a meat.
The only tabu in our diet is human meat, and in some special situations even that taboo is broken ( soccer team in Andas, some survivers from shipwreckin).
We are omniwores, and when hungry will eat whatever gives us energy, aminoacides other microelements, vitamins and so on.
If it lives here on earth we have eaten it .
But america with its atitude and the biggest population of dogs in the world, thinks about dogs as family members so they see it as
taboo meal,( like eating their relative, a human)
But humans are humans, and dogs are dogs, so they are food.
By the way indian had a traditions in eating dog's meat when there are no other, horse you need to survive, dog's are just food, and company.

In a number of countries around the world, apart from being kept as pets, certain breeds of dogs are slaughtered as a source of meat and specifically raised on farms for that purpose in some countries.

According to the ancient Hindu scriptures (cf. Manusmriti and medicinal texts like Sushrut-Samhita), dog's meat was regarded as the most unclean (and rather poisonous) food possible—it was worthy only for the lowest of the untouchable castes — who were therefore called shvapacha (those cooking dog's meat). In modern India, dog's meat is eaten in a few pockets, as in the north eastern state of Nagaland by the tribals or converted Christians.

In the Philippines, it is against the law to slaughter dogs as food. But illegal slaughterhouses exist and these are located mostly in the northern part of the country. The brutality of the manner of slaughtering the animals has come to the attention of the media which showed television documentaries of the illegal trade of dog meat.

Generally people of MANY cultures not just Americans do not eat carnivores or scavengers. Canines are both.

The reasons for this are actually rooted in biology. Carnivores and scavengers in prehistoric times were likely to eat humans or human remains. Eating something that has eaten your kin was not only repugnant; it was likely to spread parasitic disease which was very common.

There have been recent findings of cave hyenas that have illustrated this theory, showing them surrounded with bones of humans they had used for a food source, and near by caves or humans using hyenas as a food source. Both species had evidence of the same digestive parasites. This is a biological rarity. Typically parasites are highly specialized to one species. Even a change in body temperature can create a hostile environment within the same host; Fevers may be most effective at killing discouraging parasites, not bacteria or viruses.

As I understand it Asia has a strong tradition of valuing dogs, as evident by the many breed that have come from the area. Many breeds were kept a secret from foreigners, or only allowed to be owned by royalty. This does not seem like a disregard for the animal.

My understanding is that some areas of Asia have moved to dog as a food source out of necessity. It is a highly efficient scavenger, and pound for pound one of the best sources of protein for the low amount of nutrition you have to put into it. I think fish is first, then rabbit, and dog is somewhere close to 3rd on that list. I have seen some propaganda style commercials that make me think it is not a desire of the common people but a necessity of over population. Something that has to be culturally normalized in order to make the best of a tight situation.

Since America is a land of abundance most people do not find it seemly to eat an animal they often have a high emotional response to.

Have you ever seen how dogs are slaughtered in Asia??? Then you think twice!
I honestly dont care if people eat dogmeat, but let them die a human way, and not be stripped alive because that gives adrenaline. Have people ever tasted an adrenaline pig??? (a pig slaughtered in stress) you never want to taste again, believe me.
We humans are born to eat meat, we cant avoid it to killl animals. But I respect animals and their life, so it is my choice to be parttime vegetarian and the meat I eat comes from animals that had a very good life. I love dogs and I cant imagine someone be able to kill a dog, but I feel that with all animals. How can people kill it.

Its the bad way of slaughtering in Asia, that cause it that it is illegal to eat dog meat. But in America horsemeat is illegal too in some states, in my country it is sold very much, nobody has problems with it. Now are we cruel too? I think so if you know what a terrible journey slaughterhorses have to go but ok... We keep rabbits as pets while foereigners see them as food. Different cultures... Some people eat maggots and larvae, spiders and donkeybrain. As long as I dont have to eat those!

Most nations that eat dog have dogs as pets also, but make a clear distinction between 'pet dog', and farmed dog which is raised for meat. You are quite right, it makes no sense to eat some mammals and not eat others because they are "cute". Since I believe we are supposed to eat everything including meat (just look at our teeth!), perhaps the most rational way to resolve our dilemma would be to only eat creatures we know had a good life.

It certainly makes no sense that out of hundreds of mammals, most societies typically only eat three or four kinds.

I have eaten and enjoyed cow, pig, goat, lamb, kangaroo, wallaby, wombat, boar, deer, moose, elk, beaver and many others. I ate (and did not much enjoy) horse once, too.

Bon appetit!

Peoples feelings about eating dogs are culturally relative, but the fact is that eating dogs isn't healthy because they're carnivores. The toxins that accumulate in animal flesh are more concentrated because they eat other animals.

right and wrong is gray matter.

it is wrong to eat a dog here in America as it is wrong to eat beef in India or some other place.

Let's be objective, just don't eat anything you don't like and can't kill.
