Go to your physician or you local free clinic and request one...if you are a girl, you will take a pap smear (a cotton swab will be placed on your inner-vagina and a sample taken from there) and the results will be ready as soon as two weeks (or shorter in some cases)....the HIV/AIDS test is a 20-minute wait and a sample can be taken orally from your saliva...you can wait for the results or come back and get then (DON'T BE AFRAID AT ALL...it is much better to know and plan accordingly for the future). Also, search yahoo for step-by-step breakdown.

its dependent on which STD... most are microbiologically done, using tests that test for the specific bacteria, virus, fungi, etc... or even just for the chemicals they produce....
Chylamidia for example, a swab is done on ur vag, streaked onto an agarose gel medium ( petri dish) and incubated for 24 hours, then looked at under a microscope to see what grew are in fact that species. If looking isnt enough, there are SO many tests they can run where they find out exactly what species are present...
the people who do them in hospitals are called Medical Technologists
