My father claimed for his father - satisfactory response. Got just under a £1000, which had to be divided between my father and his two brothers. Well just over a £1000, but by the time the solicitors had taken thei cut it was just under. It just took a matter of months for the claim to be resolved. It all depends on how long the person concerned worked down the mines, and can be proved their death can be linked to working in the mines. My grandfather had been dead for well over 20 years before claims starting coming to light.

Chase the claim. They have paid out over £300 Million. There was a time limit for claims. But the last date I think was in 2003 - so you should be fine. But keep after it, the government won't always part with money - unless it's handing it out for something stupid. Ask for a statue of a miner to be erected at the site of some old pit and they'll find a sculpture friend to do it and the public money to pay for it. Ask for compensation for a disease caused serving your country and they delay and hope you don't live long enough to collect.
Age concern have a useful forum on the issue. Well worth a look. They are doing some good work. I even gave them a donation. I don't donate unless I see some action!
