Even though this question is an obvious attempt at justifying the containment, killing and consumption of non-human animals, I'll answer it anyway because it's very simple: being vegan, or adhering to a plant-based diet, is not about "preserving all life," it's about not inflicting unneccesary cruelty on beings that are capable of having subjective experiences of pain.
Plants do not have a nervous system, nor do they have any other physical components that would allow them to "feel" pain--they would have no use for any such part as they cannot voluntarily move...what good would feeling pain do if they're unable to get away from the source?
Some people living in what's often referred to as "third world countries" simply may not be able to afford to exclude animals from their diet if they depend on foreign aid packages or the market prices in their area have meat artificially cheap. However, almost all people in "developed" countries do not require the consumption of animals to live--in fact, the opposite is true: most people in developed countries OVERconsume.
The beings most commonly killed in the United States are cows, chicken and pigs. All three can, and do, feel just as much pain as any dog or cat, so unless you're also fine with the thought of slitting a cat's throat without anaesthesia and letting it bleed to death (similar to pigs and cows), or shocking a dog just enough to render it paralysed and then boiling its fur off (similar to chickens) then you have an ethical discrepancy which requires remedy.
I would encourage everyone that would like to further educate themselves on the subject to read this pdf document. http://www.veganoutreach.org/EIYLM.pdf It shouldn't take more than five minutes of your time. Lessening your impact on the planet is very easy and doesn't require that you immediately cease everything at once. It can be a very gradual process, and once parts of an animal-based diet are given up for a few months, you wouldn't miss them.
On a different but similar note, the best available research and analysis of oysters, clams and scallops indicates that for all practical purposes they may as well be plants. There's little evidence to support the notion of them being able to experience pain, so, although I am vegan, I could not fault someone for eating any of these three creatures. However, the methods of acquiring them are often very destructive--dragging weighted nets across the bed of the water destroys coral reef, seaweed, and various other plant life that fish and sea creatures may need to stay alive--so the consumption of them still cannot be justified unless you talk to the restaurant's/grocery store's supplier and determine whether they use such methods. If you're unwilling to do this yet still choose to eat them, then you must be willing to accept the fact that you're contributing to the destruction of the planet for the relatively selfish cause of a few seconds physical gratification. This applies to all sea creatures, though almost all of the ones not mentioned can experience pain, according to the best available research. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2983045.stm
And, finally, the "study" that Sparks provided on this page is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. Quoting The Uncoveror is no different than quoting one of the joke tabloids that you see in the checkout lines at a supermarket. Look at the home page: "RUMSFELD AND WOLFOWITZ ARE VAMPIRES, W KETCHUP CONTAINS BLOOD" and "COCKROACHES ADMIT THEY WILL MISS HUMANITY". Case closed.

I would believe the reason why they chose to eat them .. is because they don't complain ...plants even if they are hurt .. won't give a nudge or anything ....some vegetarians eat eggs too ... so maybe that gives a good summary ... egg doesn't have much of a life to give complains or show their fondness or dislikes of being eaten by someone or something now do they... lol

i am a vegetarian and the reason i dont think eating plants is wrong is this:
true, plants r living, but humans r animals so eating other animals just doesnt seem right. humans r animals and not plants so eating plants isnt as bad. if i were a plant i wouldnt eat other plants. its the same way. i am an animal so i dont eat other animals

Plants are not breathing, feeling animals
Plants are not locked up and inhumanely treated
A vegetarian is someone who eats, in simple form, plants. Thats what vegetarian means. What part of that is so difficult to comprehend?
I'm shocked you couldn't figure that one out all by yourself.

yes, some extreme vegitarians eat only nuts and fruit that falls naturally, therefore not killing the plant since the tree lives on.
second, don't you think the word 'vegitarian' has something to do with the word vegitable? just out of curiousity....
third, speaking for myself, some vegitarians are so because they believe eating other mammals and living things, which we evolved from, is barbaric and a extension of cannibalism. plants are an actual seperate type form of life; it's not perfect but it makes a lot more sense than meat eaters...

This is such an ignorant question. Most vegetarians are not worried about killing animals. We become vegetarians because it's a healthier lifestyle. Meat is hard to digest, and full of fat. Vegetables (plants) are full of vitamins and are not fattening.

It is very simple, and your question is, i am sorry but stupid.
PLANTS dont have a brain, no nerves in the body. Dont feel sh!t. Than I dont get the idea of them getting hurt. So feel free to eat all the plants in the world.

BAD NEWS FOR VEGETARIANS:
PLANTS FEEL PAIN
It has come to our attention at THE UNCOVEROR that something startling has been discovered by Dr. Bill Williams, a botanist at The Helvetica Institute. If his preliminary findings turn out to be true, they will prove that killing plants for food is no less cruel than killing animals for food. "Plants are aware," says Dr. Williams, "and they feel pain!"
Dr. Williams, and his team were doing experiments on talking to plants. He had set out to prove that this helped them only because it blows carbon dioxide over their leaves. He had one team speak lovingly to the plants, and another threaten and verbally abuse them. To the surprise of all involved, the plants that were lovingly spoken to thrived, producing large, lovely flowers. Their growth rates were off the charts! The plants that were verbally abused and threatened never bloomed. Some even withered and died.
His team then connected EEG electrodes to several plants, and measured their responses to various stimuli. "They definitely felt it when we pricked them with needles. One of my staff even burned one with a lighter. Not only did its EEG go off the charts, but so did every plant in the same room!" Dr. Williams is submitting his findings to other scientists for further review. He told me that plants not only seem to be aware and to feel pain, it looks like they can even communicate. They may even be sentient beings.
He told me, "I hadn't thought of it until now, but how does a fruit tree know how to make a sweet attractive fruit that animals will eat when it drops off, and spread the seeds? How do flowers know how to attract bees with sweet, fragrant nectar, and get their pollen spread about, assuring a next generation? They may be doing this consciously!" Maybe Disney will make a cartoon about a happy little vegetable. He will be called Buddy the Carrot. He'll lose his mother to the farmer when he picks her, and eats her. That could do to vegetables what Bambi did to meat! Carrots may in fact be more intelligent than deer. Who knows for sure? You read it here first at THE UNCOVEROR.

There are such a thing as frutarians, who only differ from 'fruitcakes' in that they are nuttier.
They only eat things like fruits and berries, because these things the plants want us to eat, because it is how they spread their seeds.
As I said, nutty as a squirrel in the mating season.
