The AIDS virus gets into the system immediately after you got infected but its AIDS effects has no definite time when it will affect the system.It could beshort period after infection or could be delayed 6-7 years or even more.For clarification I just would to differentiate AIDS virus from AIDS. AIDS virus (called HIV VIRUS) is the cause of infection which affects the immune sytem making it ineffecient resulting to different symptoms of an immune defecient that is why it is termed AIDS (ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFECIENCY SYNDROME)

AIDS is the end stage of HIV infection. There can be a window period where the virus remains undetectable. This means the virus is in your body but cannot be detected by normal tests. The window period usually takes up to 6 months. Be careful during this time as although you test negative you can still pass on the infection.
