I don't eat very much meat and sometimes it bugs me to think that I am eating an animal. I always wonder if they are all killed humanely. But why does tea taste so lovely with a fry up? I really wish it didn't. Any ideas?

I think a lot of it, at least for me, is sentimental. You should also remember that a lot of the good smell is the spices, not the meat itself. If we were really biologically inclined to eat a lot of meat, it would smell good without being cooked and we'd probably have a better way of killing animals ourselves (sharp teeth, strong jaws, fast legs, big claws, etc.) Can you imagine what it would take for you to catch, kill, and eat a wild animal without the use of tools or a hunting buddy? Your best chance would be to find an animal already dead--how do you like the smell of rotting flesh? Natural scavengers don't seem to mind, but I take it as evidence that humans probably aren't bound by nature to feed on vertebrates.

As far as whether the animals were raised and killed humanely, think about how much money and time it would cost you to raise a pig humanely, kill it, cut it up, and ship a piece to a friend across the country. Compare the costs to what you pay for a piece of meat--you find that the meat you eat is a LOT cheaper. Why? Because the people that raised it probably weren't as concerned about humane treatment as you would have been. They aren't intentionally cruel, but certainly are willing to cut corners to offer meat at a market-competitive price.

There is no truth in saying that meat smells delicious when being cooked unless you are asking someone who eats meat.

Many vegetarians will tell you quite the opposite. That the smell makes them feel sick!

The early humans most likely were meat eaters. How ever as they learned to cultivate and grow grains, vegetables and fruits they may have migrated to being vegetarians. This transitions may not have been easy and most likely evolved in some parts of the world after lot of experimentation.

Any true vegetarian will tell you that a proper and correct balance of food intake has to be maintained for good health and growth.

There are many people in this world who have never eaten meat in all of their life.

lol, who told you we were supposed to be purely vegetarians? Why do you think humans are born with incisors? Not to mention that our body works better with more protein than less.
Being a vegetarian is more of a choice. If you chose to pursue that path, there are ways to compensate for the taste of meat, though you'll have to get pretty good at cooking and also finding the best replacements. I'm a Buddhist and we are supposed to be vegetarians because if you eat meat you are eating something that used to be alive, etc etc. The sad truth is that when you eat something, something had to die for you to get that meal, whether it be plant or animal. I always offer a gatha of thanks for my meals, (which are both plant and animal by the way), and eat while enjoying the blessing that is the recieved in the form of the meal.

Being an american, I'm not sure what a "fry up" is, but I do know that meat is delicious to us because our brains tell us it is. We have evolved to eat meat and not doing so is nothing more than slacktivism. People trying to LOOK like they're making a difference, without going out and doing anything difficult to actually make one.

Some of those idiots say we're meant to be vegetarians. If we're meant to be vegetarians our bodies sure process meat pretty well.

No animals are EVER killed "humanely". They are all afraid when they are forced into the slaughter house floor (they can smell blood). And when the first one of a group get killed, they all go nuts. I worked in a slaughter house and as a commercial fisher. I am now a vegetarian (except for unfertilized eggs, I love eggs!). I think everyone should have to go to the slaughter house, pick their own animal, kill and dress it. Then they can talk. 95% of you meat eaters would be puking before you even slit the animals belly open. Any idea how much blood is in a cow? As for being "meant to be vegetarians" we are NOT SUPPOSE TO BE. It's a moral decision that one, who has examined themselves and their environment, makes one their own. We are not supposed to be monogamous either but, because of our common social morality we are, or try to be. We're supposed to have sex with people when they reach sexual maturity (12 to 15 years old). We don't because it's not morally right. Just because one gets pleasure from something doesn't mean one should engage in that activity. As well, for you Christian folks, you need to read your bible. Genesis (1:14 or 2:14, I think) tells you believers that your god gave you plants and seed bearing fruit as your food to eat. There is no mention of a T-bone steak there!

Meat tastes and smells delicious because evolution dictates that that is so. Meat is the most nutritious foodstuff available to us, and is rich in a wide range of vitamins, minerals and proteins that are both vital for a human balanced diet and exclusive to meat. Consequently our bodies want us to eat meat, as it is healthy and will enable us to grow and develop and stave of hunger in ways that we would not be able to on a vegetarian diet. If it tasted and smelled bad no one would eat it and a important source of food would be lost to us, at the expense of our health and nutrition.
Defecation only tastes disgusting because our bodies don't want to eat it because it is toxic.
Evolution is clever, more so than, when it wants you to do so, it does it with a good reason, and to ignore it is idiotic.
To he who mentioned the Venus fly trap, what would be the incentive, evolutionary speaking, of animals tasting good? Venus fly traps smell good in order to lure prey, which is completely different.

Venus fly trap looks inviting, smells delicious-gives out scent irresistible to its victims, just right to get food but ends up eaten instead. Read Exodus and perhaps in the book following it in the Bible for it tells what you can eat and what you shouldn't and why you shouldn't----esp which animals can and which can't and you'll see it makes sense. Originally Man was made vegetarian while in the Garden of Eden(Genesis) and the animals were made primarily as companions of man. While the Israelites were in captivity by the Egyptians they learned to eat meat. God gave in to them and allows it but is very specific as to which ones and how slaughtered. Also our digestive system functions better and more efficiently with grains and vegetables but meat takes days to digest. Since food animals are raised simply as food the emphasis is not on their comfort but to fatten them up and get them killed in the most efficient way(not the most humanely.)It was reading about slaugher house in James Orwells 1984 that made me vegetarian but sometimes still eat chicken but a lot of times really hungry for it but when eating in my mind pops something I read about how killed and treated and can't swallow but am the better for it-no cholesterol or heart disease problems. Try some soy products-not all but many taste just like meat-can buy at any health food store-meat substitutes or health food section of major food stores.

What I find strange is how hard it is to "naturally" acquire the full nutrient mix (proteans in particular) by purely eating plants. Today, we can find the mix in stores, but how many places in the wild would early man have found the full nutrient mix in naturally occurring plant life?

Enjoy that meat smell, it isn't mean if it is killed before it is cooked. Most people killing animals are interested in speed, not in watching the animals slowly suffer. I only worry about the veal being too young.
