My mate has diabetes but her low symptoms ae vertually the same as her high symptoms (i know what the propper term is but i just cant spell them sorry). How do you know if shes haveing one or the other and how to help her, should i give her a little sugar and if she gets worse or if nothing happens then ill know shes on a high, but the only prob is i dont want to kill her as am not allowed to give her insullin (there are different amounts to give her), in my first aid at work course it doesnt tell you about this problem.

the general saying is if you are unsure give sugar!! You can die from a low bg very fast but a high one can be controlled if she tests. the little rhyme i learned in school is "hot and dry it's high cold and clamy give them candy"

You should ask your partner if there is any clear different in their signs like my son sweats only when hi. Another way and the best is to have them show you how to do a blood glucose test with their meter. You need to know what their low number is and what their high number is. My sons low is 60 and high is 200. Just get a education from your partner and try getting info off the net you need to learn as much as you can not only to understand what is going on but so you can be more relaxed knowledge is power and helps you relax some. Just remember a diabetic will say and do things during a hi or low that may be physical or verbal.

Get her the education she needs so as not to use you for her secondary gains. Most diabetics know what's going on. If she uses insulin, than she has a glucometer. This helpless behaviour has got to stop. I know 9 year olds that do a better job. Call the American Diabetic Association and start there. They will teach you both all you need to know for free. If she doesn't control her diabetes be prepared for kidney failure and blindness gauranteed. Then what? Good luck and you two need to start living.I wonder if her doctor rolls her eyes when she sees her coming.

go to her next doctor's appointment with her. ask him what to do. and if she is having these many highs and lows something is wrong. perhaps you could help her chart them so she can have somehting to show the doctor.
the low is called hypoglycemia. and no you do not want to get the two mixed up or you could make it worse. do you live in an area where they have a call in nursing program? in alberta we have a system where you can call a nurse if you have a question.
if she is really bad and you dont know call 911.

Call her doctor and ask him/her all of these questions and do it as soon as possible. If you can't get a hold of them on a Sunday contact a pharmasist. Diabetes is nothing to joke about. Good luck.

She should have a way to test her blood sugar level.. a prick test or keytone sticks... you should be able to determine what the problem is.
If she's having an episode so bad she cannot communicate how to test... GET OFFLINE AND TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL OR CALL 911!

the best way to tell is by checking her sugar with a glucameter. prick her finger with a needle, and drop a little blood on the test strip. it automatically tests for you. every diabetic should have one of these whether they take insulin or not.

You have to test her, that's the only way to know for sure, then act from there.
Have them explain to you the insulin regimen that they are supposed to follow. If you are the SO it's IMPERATIVE that you know how to administer insulin, or glucagon when necsesary.

Take her blood glucose measure and that will tell you if it's high or low. If she can't talk or is passed out, call the paramedics.
