Heartburn

This can be very painful and it can ruin your evening. There are a few things that you can do to relieve this pain.

Don't lie flat on your back. Heartburn is caused by the acid in your stomach moving upward to your esophagus. So if you are flat on a bed, it just makes it a little more difficult for the acid to go down.

Try having a bowl of rice pudding, made with milk, now this combo of the two should help absorb stomach acid.

Coffee and chocolate can inflame heartburn, so avoid them if you can.

If your heartburn is a regular problem, you should think about going to the doctor.

tums are good for occasionally heartburn, they start working right away. If you know that certain foods trigger it, try taking Zantac or Pepcid about 30 minutes before a meal - they are only once a day, unlike tums - so don't take more than that, but they can prevent heartburn before it starts (both are over the counter, as is Nexium and Prilosec now - but I'd only suggest that if you were having daily heartburn for more than 2 weeks or so).
if it's bothering you at night, try elevating your head and chest somewhat (helps with gravity) and/or lying on your left side (the way your stomach is positioned, this is best to keep stomach contents from coming up). If you continue to have a problem with it, even when taking OTC meds for it, contact your doctor as it could be a symptom of GERD.

It depends on how bad it is and how often it happens.

If it is just occasional then you can use something like Gaviscon, Mylanta, Tums or something like that. Personally I like Gaviscon the best.

But if it is something that happens all the time and/or it's severe, you need to have yourself checked by a doctor, it could be acid reflux and you may need something stronger as well as a change of diet. I know, I've been there.

You need to stay away from acidic foods, coffee, tea, peppermint, and other similar things that can trigger heartburn. I used to take prescription strength Zantac for mine until the cause was determined.

Keep in mind, food isn't the only thing that can cause heartburn. Hearburn can also be triggered by stress, so if you have a lot of stress in your life you need to try to get it under control in order to avoid the heartburn.

Good luck.

I read the previous answers and agree. However, I can do all those things and use home remedies, over-the-counter remedies, and even a RX if it's severe enough, but nobody mentioned another major factor in the cause of heartburn--stress. Stress alone is a major contributor for heartburn, so think about it and remember, don't sweat the small stuff. And really, most of the stuff is small. Good luck.

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://bitly.im/aMGqI

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

water definitely helps! Also change your eating habits. Don't eat things with a high acidity level. If you smoke quit. This only adds to your heartburn woes. If all else fails try over the counter heartburn meds!

Get some Tums, Maalox, Pepcid...or if you mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a little water and drink it, that should take care of it. If the heartburn does not go away for over a week, you need to see a doctor.

Although people usually take a Rolaids, eating something could help. While you are chewing, the saliva and mucous can start building up again and line your esophagus and stomach. Try to sit upright, don't lay down. This is so the hydrochloric acid in your stomach can't make it's way up your esophagus as easily.

(When you have heartburn, it's a lack of mucous in your esophagus, therefore the acids in your stomach are pretty much burning in there.)
