She's not even close friends with the hostess. She is going with the best friend of the hostess.

If she is the only one it can mean only two things,
1. Hostess doesn't like her
2. she thinks that she is so cool that she can ask her for anything without her thinking it is stupid or rude, it can be a sign of a affection

Yes that is rude. She should spike it with vodka and get the hostess drunk and then ask why she was the only one asked to bring food. The truth will come out

If she's not close friends with the hostess then I wouldn't make her because its not right to have to supply for everyone. It is rude for the hostess to do that.

It depends. If it's her friends, she should just politely ask them why she was summonsed to bring this item. If the people who asked her to bring the watermelon aren't her friends, they could have a nasty trick up their sleeve. Ask the Hostess about this.

YES, IT'S VERY RUDE. IF IT IS A POTLUCK SHE AND EVERYONE ELSE WOULD KNOW IT. IF THEY WERE GIVING THE PARTY TOGETHER IT WOULD BE FINE BUT THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THE CASE. I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUR NIECE AND THOSE PEOPLE. THEY ARE CLEARLY USING HER FOR SOME REASON. I WOULD ASK THE PEOPLE WHY SHE IS THE ONLY ONE ASKED. IT'S POSSIBLE THERE IS A MISUNDERSTANDING OR MAYBE THEY JUST DON'T HAVE GOOD FETCHING UP...

Guests are never obligated to bring anything to a party other than themselves. Maybe the best friend (male) she is going to attend with is a "cheap-o" and the host figures he should bring something more than an additional guest along......?

when I have a party, I ask everyone to bring food, this way, I don't have to be the only one cooking. I would ask why she is the only one that has to bring watermelon. that was a nasty thing to say sinless to anyone

Your niece better bring that damn watermelon - she better learn some respect. Make her bring multiple watermelons and fried chicken too - and you can have a nice bbq. Can I get an invitation please? I'll bring the KY Jelly.
