She's the only one told to bring something.

She was told to bring a melon of some sort, not cantaloupe or honeydew melon because the hostess doesn't like them.

While guests are never obligated to bring anything to a party other than themselves, offering a simple gift to the host is a thoughtful gesture......Maybe your niece offered/insisted/volunteered to bring something? What relationship is the host to your niece? A good friend or family? Could be the host is planning on asking other guests to bring items too? Possibly the guest list has increased and the host needs more food selections? Maybe your neice is very talented and knows she'll decorate it like this?

I don't think that is that rude, especially if your niece happens to be particularly good friends with the hostess. It might have been the only thing that the hostess didn't have time to pick up, hence your niece being the only one asked to bring something. Considering the cost (not very much) and the time and effort (a trip to the grocery store) to do the favor, I'd say it's really not so bad.

Depends. Did you niece ask what she can bring? Is everyone being asked to bring something? Better to know what is needed than be the fifth person to show up with a pot full of baked beans, no?

Are they going to spike it? Is she old enough for the booze if they do?

Not really if everyone is asked to bring something and the hostess should provide something too
