Plasma pheresis removes plasma. It depends on what is used to replace the plasma during the procedure - if FFP is used to replace plasma then the Factor VIII is replaced - or if albumin is used to replace plasma then Factor VIII is removed. Sometimes cryopoor FFP is used to replace the plasma. Cryo= Factor VIII so cryopoor FFP would also remove Factor VIII. Cryopoor FFP must be requested specifically - not all Blood Banks have it readily available so it might have to be ordered and shipped from another location.
I don't think DIC is caused by Factor VIII. It usually is a result of hypercoagulation due to exposure to thromboplastin - and treatment is sometimes Heparin and to replace the blood components that have been consumed like giving FFP, Platelets and Cryoprecipitate (Factor VIII).
There are several syndromes that require Plasma Pheresis - like the HELLP syndrome and ITP and Hemolytic-Uremic syndrome - these syndromes. Some of these syndromes can lead to DIC - especially Hemolytic-Uremic syndrome.
