Takoyaki (Japanese: たこ焼, たこ焼き, or 章魚焼き, literally fried or baked octopus) is a popular Japanese dumpling made of batter, diced octopus, tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, konnyaku, and green onion, topped with okonomiyaki sauce, green laver (aonori), mayonnaise, and katsuobushi (fish shavings). Making takoyaki requires a takoyaki pan, a special frying pan made of cast iron with hemispherical molds. There is a similarly named dish called Ikayaki but it is a broiled whole squid and bears no resemblance.
Although takoyaki can easily be made at home if the equipment is available, it is usually considered to be fast food and mostly sold on the streets. Frozen takoyaki are also sold, and there are restaurants in which customers can cook their own takoyaki at their tables. Takoyaki is especially popular in the Kansai region, but has risen in popularity in other parts of Japan. In the Kansai region, takoyaki is eaten as a side dish with a bowl of cooked rice. Elsewhere in Japan, it is eaten without rice as a snack food.

â¡Yes! As a matter of fact we ate it tonight as a snack. A popular 'takoyaki' shop, Gindaco, delivers in my neighborhood:

My nieces visiting from the USA wanted to eat it tonight.
-There are many ways you can eat 'takoyaki', topped with sauce and katsuobushi-bonito flakes (hubby ate this):

-With sauce and mayonnaise (my nieces ate this):

-With sauce and Japanese green onion (I love this):

The toppings you choose will change the taste a little.
âTakoyaki is slightly crispy on the outside, soft, puffy and a tiny bit runny on the inside. It doesn't have a strong octopus flavor. The other ingredients, especially the green onion and pickled ginger make a delicious combination. I think 'takoyaki' is an acquired taste for some because it tends to be a little 'runny' inside. I personally prefer 'okonimiyaki',

which is 'more cooked', but I still like 'takoyaki' as a snack.(*^o^*) Hope this helps! If you have the chance, don't pass it up to try 'takoyaki', you just might love it!â¡

The only time I would ever eat tako (octopus) is in a takoyaki. The batter has to be fresh, so it'll be crispy on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside. Complete with sauce, mayonaise and bonito flakes. Japanese fast food...thumbs up! (^ - ^)b

I've eaten it but did not particularly care for it. Then again, I don't like seafood that much, but was willing to try it. I guess I didn't like the feel of the octopus leg.....the dough part was tasty though. I would say try it if you like seafood. If you are grossed out by octopus , then you will not like it.

Donia gave an excellent description..!
I have eaten them, but I'm not as impressed as I should be ... I don't like the way the batter around the octopus chunk is only half-cooked - and it IS supposed to be that way! I only like batter that's cooked until it's firm, the way I make my okonomi-yaki..!! Delicious!
