Kobe beef can get very $$$ and it's usually onlly offered at a yakiniku style steakhouse. Basically, there are 2 types of Japanese steakhouses: yakiniku or teppanyaki. Yakiniku is where you cook the meat yourself on the table. An inlaid grill is on each table and it's usually for smaller dining parties, such as 2 or 4 per table so each party can cook their own meat.

Teppanyaki is similar to yakiniku in that the meat is cooked right before your eyes, but with teppanyaki, you sit at a large sized dining table (like an 8 or 10 seater) and there is 1 chef per table who will cook the order for you. The grill is attached to one side of the table, so it's almost like watching a show since you are sitting on the other side of the grill. Sometimes if you go to a teppanyaki style restaurant and there are only 2 of you, they will seat you with other guests as all of the tables are the large ones. With teppanyaki, it's a flat style grill, the kind restaurants use where as yakiniku is usually more like a bbq style (grill with slits).

Yakiniku will usually offer many different kinds of Japanese meat and different cuts/selections. They may offer the famous Kobe beef, as yakiniku style beef is cut very thin and small portions. Typically you will order 2-3 plates of meat per person. Kobe can get $$$, but it's probably worth it to try at least once. A cheaper alternative is the Washu Gyu - it is a lot less expensive but made to taste just like Kobe.

A teppanyaki style steakhouse will usually have more regular style cuts of meat, like steak, chicken or shrimp. At this kind of restaurant, just order whichever meat you like, as the cut will be what is normal by American standards like NY strip steak or ribeye steak.

Naturally, beef, I imagine. Ask the server what's their house specialty or if he can recommend anything to you. Mind you, it might be pricey, but why not, you only live once! But do have the Kobe (pronounced "ko-bay") beef. It's really the best, very tender and trust me, melts in your mouth like butter.

Bon Apetite.
