Yes... My family do celebrate Mid Autumn Moon festival...

No... My do not make it ourselves in Singapore... We can bought it at shopping mall during the festival... My family and I like any kind of snow-skin made mooncakes... not the tradition fried/oven type...

Recipe of Snow Skin Flavour Mooncakes
Makes: 9 large ones (12og filling + 60g snow skin)
Or 20 small ones (60g filling + 30g snow skin)

Ingredients:
150g cooked/fried glutinous rice flour
200g icing sugar
65g shortening
150g cold drinking water

Preparation:
Sieve flour & icing sugar.

Add shortening.

Add water. Mix well till it forms a soft dough.

Set dough aside for about 20 mins.

Divide dough into small portions of about 30g each.

Flatten dough to wrap up 60g fillings.

Seal up dough to enclose filling completely. Press into mould & remove.

Note: For green tea flavor, add ¾ tbsp green tea powder to the flour and sieve.

It's best to go to a Chinese bakery store & literally buy the moon cakes they have. The displays are quite something...the packaging is far better than years ago. And the taste? Well, you can get all sorts nowadays. From nuts, to sweets - red bean, to even pineapple I saw once. But the best is the centre - the yolk.

Making wise, it's not as easy as you would think. A lot goes into making such a small cake.

Best that you head over to any Chinatown in your area & buy it than to make it.

Enjoy!

Yup, and my mother still makes the traditional ones once a year. It's definitely not easy to make, she took lessons a while back and we can only make ones that are smaller in size. Getting the ingredient isn't too hard, but you have to be pretty precise in the quantity so it fits perfectly in the mold. I don't have the recipe with me but for the amount of effort that is required to make them (and don't expect success after many trials), I say you are better off buying them. Mooncake go well with tea.

I celebrated pretty much all the Chinese Festivals when I was still with my family back in my home country. But since I live in Australia, I don't really celebrate it anymore. But I still buy the mooncake, it's one of my favorites! But I don't like those with egg yolk inside ... yuck!

I still celebrate sometimes, but I don't know how to make the moon cakes. I especially love the paper lanterns.
